Kindle (eink) Jailbreak Index
First: You should be able to tell exactly which kind of Kindle you have, both because that's a key information anyway, but also to familiarize yourself with the keywords & nicknames we employ, which will help you tell at first glance if something applies to your device (via the forum prefixes for instance). To help you in this endeavor, take a look at this wiki page, which will explain how to easily identify your Kindle model, and provides a list of all currently known Kindle devices.
CURRENT JAILBREAKS: Kindle 1.x (original kindle), no jailbreak needed Kindle 2.x, 3.x & 4.x (legacy, non-touch devices) Kindle Touch/PW1/PW2 5.0.x - 5.4.4.2 Kindle PW1 5.6.1.1 Kindle firmware version 5.6.5 PW2, PW3(B), PW3W, KT2, KT3(B), KT3W, KV, and KOA HISTORICAL JAILBREAKS: Tutorial: Serial Jailbreaking your fw >= 5.6.x Kindle for Dummies Tools: Kindle Factory Image Generic Jailbreak Tutorial: 6th/7th generation JB from greater than 5.6.5 firmware ESSENTIAL HACKS: KUAL: Kindle Unified Application Launcher (v 2.6) MRPI: MobileRead Package Installer KOReader: a document reader for PDF, DJVU, EPUB, FB2, HTML, ... (GPLv3) Font, ScreenSaver & USBNetwork Hacks for Kindle 2.x, 3.x & 4.x FW 5.x (KT/PW/PW2/KT2/KV/PW3) USBNetwork hack Snapshots of NiLuJe's hacks (latest "unstable" releases) So! Jailbreaking... what next? NOTES: This should help make the Kindle Developer's Corner forum a better organized and easier to use place, for beginners and old-timers alike. The jailbreak index (above) has been cleaned up, and some "essential hacks" added.
Suggestions are welcome (post below), and forum mods are welcome to update the first post as needed. Thanks. |

It looks good now.
Will add it with this evenings edit of the directions. If no new model numbers show up in the next 48 hours or so - I am going to push the "Publish" button on this project and call it done. (Similar to sticking a fork in it and calling it done.) |

I've tried searching the site, but I can't find an answer to this. Apologies if it has been answered already.
I have a Kindle 2nd generation (serial number begins B003) that is running 2.5.8 jailbroken with screensaver hack installed. I had not used the device in a very long time (Nook Color for many years then Nook HD+ currently, but I've been trying to read in bright sunlight recently so I dug the Kindle out). When I charged it up and then tried to sync, I got the message saying there was a problem. Googled and found the issue was an Amazon mandatory update last year. I've tried to figure out how to make my device work, but not sure if I can just manually apply the Amazon update or not since I'm jailbroken. If anyone could point me in the right direction, I'd appreciate it. Thanks! |

Everything done here on the model was at the very start of things - including the jail breaks. Since the updates for a K2 are the 'incremental' type, which is very sensitive to changed files: - I would uninstall everything that has an 'update_*_uninstall.bin followed as the final step, uninstalling the jail break. At that time, there where two jail breaks - you have to use the uninstaller for the jail break you installed. It would be nice if you happened to keep a copy of all the packages you installed, but that is probably too much to hope for. You will just have to dig them out again from where ever they are posted. The first place to try is NiLuJe's most recent builds - https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh...d.php?t=225030 (and hope everything you installed is listed there - it will simplify things) Once everything has been uninstalled, then download from Amazon the most recent K2 firmware. NOTE: They did not bump the version number when they updated the contents - so it will show on their site as 2.5.8 still. But the package has been updated to include the 'mandatory fix' which used to be a separate download. |
