Help needed to find 2 old books on ancient rome
I remember a mention of two books in the early '70s.
BOOK 1 - Man goes back to ancient rome, knows about medicine and science. People live longer, Rome prospers and grows bigger. Book 2 -A man is sent back in time by an overpopulated earth to kill the first before he can transform the Roman empire. Anyone know the titles? |

I've never heard about these books but I'd love to learn more about them.
You might want to see "time travel/alternate universe" section of these two Wikipedia entries: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fiction...e_Roman_empire http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fiction...n_ancient_Rome |

The one with the assassin is "The Deadly Mission of Phineas Snodgrass" by Frederick Pohl. It was written as a response to L. Sprague deCamp's Lest Darkness Fall.

Yes, book 1 certainly sounds like "Lest Darkness Fall" to me. A true SF classic.

Actually, isn't that just one book?
"The Deadly Mission of Phineas Snodgrass" The wikipedia article on "Lest Darkenss Falls" states: "A response to this story is "The Deadly Mission of Phineas Snodgrass" by Frederick Pohl, in which a man travels back to 1 BCE and teaches modern medicine, causing a population explosion. It ends with the fantastically overpopulated alternate timeline sending someone back to assassinate the title character, allowing darkness to fall for thankful billions." |

Thanks for all the help
"The Deadly Mission of Phineas Snodgrass" is contained is several compilations.
None are in ebook format. "Time Travelers: Fiction in the Fourth Dimension" is in me local library. So I'm off to get it. Thanks again. |

Went to the paper library
I found "The Deadly Mission of Phineas Snodgrass".
Very short, 3 - 4 pages. To know that it exists is enough to enjoy the thought. Very tongue in cheek. thanks again. |
