Lofting, Hugh: The Story of Doctor Dolittle (illus). v1. 12 Feb 2018
The Story of Doctor Dolittle, told and illustrated by Hugh Lofting (1886 – 1947)
With an introduction by Hugh Walpole (1884 – 1941) The text and illustrations of this book are in the public domain in countries where copyright is “Life+70” or less, and in the USA. The Story of Doctor Dolittle introduces us to this respected physician and naturalist, whose love of animals and growing household menagerie leads to him learning the secret of speaking to animals from his parrot Polynesia, and then taking up veterinary practice. His fame in the animal kingdom spreads throughout the world, and he receives a desperate plea to go to Africa to cure a terrible monkey epidemic. So begins the first voyage of the Doctor and his animal companions. * * * * * British author Hugh John Lofting (14 January 1886 – 26 September 1947) created the character of Doctor Dolittle, one of the classics of children’s literature. The Doctor first appeared in Lofting’s illustrated letters to his children, written from the trenches while he was serving in the British Army during World War I. The stories (a series of twelve books, the final two completed, edited, and published posthumously) are set in early Victorian England. The second in the series, The Voyages of Doctor Dolittle (1922), won Lofting the prestigious Newbery Medal. Despite the author’s obviously benign posture, the books became a target of controversy in the 1960’s amid accusations of racism and attitudes of colonialism, and went out of print for some time. Later editions in the 1980’s were bowdlerized to remove offending content and illustrations. The Doctor and the tales of his adventures are better known today through movie and television adaptations. (—Extracted and adapted from Wikipedia.) This ebook is based on text from gutenberg.org, from an early unexpurgated edition. Transcription errors were corrected; punctuation, italics and diacritics formatted; illustrations manually cleaned and enhanced. Embedded font for titling. To provide consistency throughout this series of ten books, some punctuation was modernized and spelling Anglicized and standardized. ******* Uploaded version 2, some text and format tweaks. Previous downloads: 109. * * * * * This “unsanitized” version gives you a chance to take a stroll down memory lane, and perhaps take the opportunity to discuss those controversial passages with your children. Dear Granny Grump,
thank you for this phantastic library. That said, I am very fond of omnibusses. They greatly help me not to mix up reading order. Any chance of one? |

@ Bombur -- you are very welcome.
I can make an omnibus, but it will be simply HUGE, because of all the illustrations. Unless I do it in several volumes, as I have with others. Would that work for you? EDIT TO ADD: I was just reconnoitering, and in order to stay under the 20mb upload limit, I will have to downsize illustrations (no big deal), otherwise no more than two books per volume. Even so, it might end up with only 3 books per volume, unless I do a non-illustrated version, which would be quite small. I will do some experimenting this weekend. Thank you for your consideration. Personaly, I would not mind a version without illustrations.
