What is Calibre's 'internal' format?
What does Calibre use as an intermediary format when converting? I assume xhtml, or xml or somesuch, but...
Reason I ask: I'm hoping at some point to see an internal editor -- open a book to edit, fix some things, restore/convert, etc. m a r |

It's EPUB (XHTML) I believe.

It's OEB (basically an unzipped EPUB). And yeah there will be a touch up editor in the future.

Cool. Pre- or post-division? (Calibre divides ePubs into chunks, right?)
Good to know on the touch-up editor. Thanks for your remarkable work. m a r |

calibre only divides epubs if you don't tell it not too
The dividing won't happen in the touch up editor, only during conversion. So you can use the editor with a divided or an undivided EPUB |

Would this touch up editor allow us to manually identify chapters? That would simply be awesome.

Most probably, though since it is right now only an idea with no code, I don't want to commit myself to anything.
