FREE/BARGAIN — Mystery, Suspense & Thrillers

This thread is for pointing out free and bargain Mystery/Suspense/Thriller titles to each other. Please don't post any self-published books (unless you have read them yourself, think they are excellent, and you're not connected to the author in any way) and please do a search before posting to avoid duplicates.

Because Kindle freebies are the easiest to find, the majority of books listed here will probably be from Amazon. That being said, deals from other retailers and/or in other formats are certainly more than welcome!
In the event that no retailer is specifically mentioned in a post, it is safe to assume the deal is for Amazon US.

As always — if a deal could span multiple subjects, please cross-post to ALL applicable deals megathreads.
This is pretty much the one time when double-posting is not only allowed, but encouraged. Seize the opportunity!

Keep in mind, most freebies last only for a day or two, so grab them fast!

(You can find the 2016 thread here)

Free today on Amazon UK - Manners by Robert Newman

Spoiler:
"No one is a policeman in a fight..."

While trying to apprehend a dangerous suspect, PC John Manners ends up in a life or death struggle, and the suspect ends up dead.

While suspended from duty and awaiting trial for manslaughter, even Manners is unsure whether he is innocent or guilty of killing Lee Andrew.

While interrogating his own past, his identity unravels…

Cut off from reality, he wanders the streets, an independent beat-officer on a one-man patrol.

Listening in on Holloway calls with a phone scanner, he hears voices planning to 'kill the bitch.'

Now his independent patrol has purpose: to prevent a murder.

Following shadowy clues in the killers' slang, he searches for 'the lamb' and 'the broken bridge.'

But each step he takes brings him closer to forces of destruction...

Free today on Amazon UK - Sandstorm by Laurence Gough

Spoiler:
A secret plot with dangerous repercussions…

Ruthless CIA agent Jack Downey is on a mission: assassinate Libyan dictator Col. Qaddafi.

But this is a mission that only Downey knows about.

For Downey has told CIA Chief-of-station, Richard Foster, that his team of renegades will help protect a defecting Libyan colonel. Suspicious of the rogue agent’s true motives, however, Foster secretly puts Downey under surveillance.

Meanwhile, American businessman Charlie McPhee has spent the last few years in Egypt, following an acrimonious divorce.

Earning a meagre existence as a nightclub ventriloquist, his past as a lock expert brings him to the attention of the Libyan secret police. When he is kidnapped and forced to open a safe belonging to revolutionaries, Charlie manages to escape – but kills the Libyans in the process.

The incident leads to an interrogation by the CIA and Charlie is forced to help with Downey’s mission – or do time in prison.

Comprising the remainder of Downey’s unorthodox hit squad are London antiques dealer Jennifer Forsyth, whose father was killed on Qaddafi’s orders, and hitmen Hubie Sweets and Mungo Martin.

With this ragtag group of agents, what will be the endgame of Downey’s dangerous scheme?

Free today on Amazon UK - A Curl Up and Die Day by Frank Dickens

Spoiler:
The heat is on…

Dicks is a cycle-racing fanatic, a former rider whose career ended abruptly at the Rome Olympics when he got the worst of an argument with Lars Pederson, a 22- stone Swedish shot-putter.

In Spain for the world championships thirteen years later, Dicks meets Pederson again — and his new wife Ingrid, a Scandinavian blonde who threatens to distract even the most committed enthusiast from the events on the circuit.

When a Russian cyclist disappears, and the Pedersons seem to know more than they are telling, Dicks finds himself swept along by a tide of events more fast-moving and more dangerous than any cycle race.

Free on Amazon UK - The Executioner by Chris Carter

Spoiler:
Inside a Los Angeles church, on the altar steps, lies the blood-soaked, decapitated body of a priest. Carefully positioned, legs stretched out, arms crossed over the chest, the most horrifying thing of all is that the priest's head has been replaced by that of a dog. Later, the forensic team discover that, on the victim's chest, the figure 3 has been scrawled in blood.

At first, Detective Robert Hunter believes that this is a ritualistic killing. But as more bodies surface, he is forced to reassess. All the victims died in the way they feared the most. Their worst nightmares have literally come true. But how could the killer have known? And what links these apparently random victims?

Hunter finds himself on the trail of an elusive and sadistic killer, somone who apparently has the power to read his victims' minds. Someone who can sense what scares his victims the most. Someone who will stop at nothing to achieve his twisted aim.

Free on Amazon UK - Murder at the Nineteenth (Lambert and Hook Detective series Book 1) by J M Gregson

Spoiler:
Chief Superintendent John Lambert was looking forward to relaxing at the end of a tedious day.

Instead, James Shepherd, Chairman of the Golf Club calls to say he needs to see Lambert urgently.

Despite his misgivings, Lambert honours the not-so-polite request and makes his way to the Golf Club later that night. Surprised by the lack of human presence at the Club, Lambert begins a room-by-room search for the chairman.

Surely, he must still be around, after all, it had been Shepherd’s request to meet.

And, Shepherd’s unmistakeable Rolls Royce was still parked outside.

Finding a very dead James Shepherd was not something Lambert had been expecting. The heavy knife that protruded from his chest suggested that this night was only about to get longer…

Sergeant Bert Hook joins Lambert on the tedious task of speaking to all who’d last seen Shepherd. With the coroner’s estimated time of death to work on, Lambert focuses on the members of the committee who’d last seen Shepherd.

The only problem is that none of them seem the least bit sorry about Shepherd’s death…

Lambert is puzzled.

Digging further into the movements of the key suspects, Lambert and Hook narrow down the potential motivation each suspect could have had and as the investigation unfolds, another call to Lambert and another request for an impromptu meeting throws another murder into the mix.

Only this time, none of the suspects have alibis…

Lambert is going to have to work hard and fast to bring this string of murders to a close.

Or was the murderer too clever for their own good?

Free on Amazon UK - The Kill Dog by John Burke

Spoiler:
'...When crops wave in the breeze, it means that the dog is running through them. You can't catch him until the harvest is almost ending. Then … a ritual slaying to bring good luck...'

Maggie Armitage, visiting Prague on a brashly optimistic market research project, sees her plans collapse when a Russian tank settles itself outside her hotel…

Against a background of violence, she drives towards the border — and acquires as passenger: a Czech archaeologist on the run.

Jan's marriage, too, has been violent and his wife, the vindictive Blanka, has been collaborating with the secret police.

This is the nightmare from which Jan is fleeing — only to find himself still enmeshed in its tentacles…

He falls under deep suspicion in England, the country he has loved and respected for so long.

Jan is carrying a valuable secret, but has no idea why exactly it’s so valuable.

Nothing so crudely melodramatic as an atomic formula or a defence plan … yet when at last he returns to face his enemies in the Czech Republic, it proves even more dramatic than he could ever have guessed…

Cold Granite, the first Logan McRae mystery by Stuart McBride, is currently $0.99 at Amazon US.
($4.99 at B&N, Kobo, and Google.)

Spoiler:
Stuart MacBride’s Number One bestselling crime series opens with this award-winning debut. DS Logan McRae and the police in Aberdeen hunt a child killer who stalks the frozen streets.

Winter in Aberdeen: murder, mayhem and terrible weather…

It’s DS Logan McRae’s first day back on the job after a year off on the sick, and it couldn’t get much worse. Three-year-old David Reid’s body is discovered in a ditch: strangled, mutilated and a long time dead. And he’s only the first. There’s a serial killer stalking the Granite City and the local media are baying for blood.

Soon the dead are piling up in the morgue almost as fast as the snow on the streets, and Logan knows time is running out. More children are going missing. More are going to die. And if Logan isn’t careful, he could end up joining them.

FYI, I just finished reading this a week ago and thought it was very good. Well-written, atmospheric, suspenseful, but not for the faint of heart. I've already added the next in the series to my TBR pile.

Thanks - I might as well round out my collection. (Would rather have these singles than the omnibus I just bought, but I won't rebuy the two I needed in the omnibus.)
