Edith Nesbit Bland, English author and poet, published approximately 40 books for children under the name of E. Nesbit. She created an innovative body of work that combined realistic, contemporary children in real-world settings with magical objects and adventures and sometimes travel to fantastic worlds. In doing so, she was a direct or indirect influence on many subsequent writers, including P. L. Travers (author of “Mary Poppins”), Edward Eager (author of the “Magic” series), Diana Wynne Jones (“Chrestomanci”), J. K. Rowling (“Harry Potter”), and C. S. Lewis (“Narnia”). This is the second in the series about the six Bastables. Sent away to the country after a particularly unruly episode, the well-meaning but rambunctious Bastable children solemnly vow to reform their behavior, and form the Society of Wouldbegoods.
