FREE (and bargain) books for the Kindle - August 2010
It's a new month and there are new freebies. Several from last month are still free, so be sure to check the previous thread, HERE.
This is the sticky thread for free and bargain books in the Kindle store for August 2010. Rather than try to update the first post with a list of all the books, which is continually changing, instead new books will be posted at the end of the thread and each month there will be a new thread, letting the old one drop off the top of the forum. Anyone can post to the thread, but there are a few rules:

New freebies for August:
Sullivan's Evidence, by Nancy Taylor Rosenberg Book Description New York Times bestselling author Nancy Taylor Rosenberg's latest thriller finds probation officer Carolyn Sullivan pursuing a twisted killer in a case that defies logic, evidence, and Carolyn's own street smarts. . . It's been ten years since Carolyn Sullivan helped put vicious murderer and serial rapist Carl Holden behind bars. Forensic evidence had him nailed dead to rights. But in a stunning turn of events, Holden is once again a free man-and Carolyn is his probation officer. To the state, Holden has served his time. To Carolyn, he represents a heinous miscarriage of justice. Then a body is found in the same location where Holden buried his first victim. As the dead count quickly mounts, everything Carolyn ever trusted as a professional is put to the test. With time running out, only the biggest gamble of her life can stop a ruthless killer-or bring alive her worst nightmare. The Ocean Inside, by Janna McMahan Book Description From the acclaimed author of Calling Home comes a compelling new novel about the bonds between husband and wife, parents and children, and about the strength that lies within us, waiting to be tested. . . Life changes in an instant. One day, Emmett and Lauren Sullivan's biggest worries revolve around the escalating taxes on their gorgeous Victorian beach house on Pawley's Island, South Carolina. The next, they're facing a devastating crisis. Emmett and Lauren have always been a team, working together to raise their daughters in this beautiful, tranquil spot on the edge of the Deep South. Now, with all their attention focused on nine-year-old Ainslie, they barely notice as their older daughter, Sloan, drifts further away from them and toward a reckless path that could tear the family apart. Deeply evocative and beautifully rendered, The Ocean Inside explores what it means to hope, to love, and to fight for what matters most, even in the face of overwhelming odds. The Man Who Loved Jane Austen, by Sally Smith O' Rourke Book Description When New York artist Eliza Knight buys an old vanity table one lazy Sunday afternoon, she has no idea of its history. Tucked away behind the mirror are two letters. One is sealed; the other, dated May 1810, is addressed to "Dearest Jane" from "F. Darcy" - as in Fitzwilliam Darcy, the fictional hero of Jane Austen-s Pride and Prejudice. Could one of literature's most compelling characters been a real person? More intriguing still, scientific testing proves that the second, sealed letter was written by Jane herself. Caught between the routine of her present life and these incredible discoveries from the past, Eliza decides to look deeper and is drawn to a majestic, 200-year-old estate in Virginia's breathtaking Shenandoah Valley. There she meets the man who may hold the answer to this extraordinary puzzle. Now, as the real story of Fitzwilliam Darcy unfolds, Eliza finds her life has become a modern-day romance, one that perhaps only Jane herself could have written.... Venus in Blue Jeans, by Meg Benjamin, the first in her Konigsburg, Texas series, is free courtesy of Samhain this morning. As always, check their waning content before clicking. Book Description A guy. A girl. A Chihuahua. Two of them will find the love of their lives. Coming off a broken engagement to a lying charmer, all bookstore owner Docia Kent wants is a fling, not a long-term romance. And for her fabulously wealthy and fabulously nosy parents to butt out of her life for a while. The Texas Hill Country town of Konigsburg looks like the perfect place to get both. Especially when she gets a look at long, tall country vet Cal Toleffson. Cal has other plans for Docia. One glance at the six-foot version of Botticelli's Venus, and he knows he's looking at the woman of his dreams. Now if he can just fend off the eccentric characters of Konigsburg long enough to convince her romance isn't such a bad idea. One night of mind-blowing sex isn't the only thing that leaves them both stunned. With Docia's bookstore under attack, Konigsburg suddenly doesn't seem so welcoming. Once again she finds her trust tested-and is left wondering if she was ever meant to have a happily ever, after all. Warning: Contains explicit sex, hot Texas nights, cool sarcastic friends, the world's sweetest hero and the world's saddest Chihuahua. |

Tim Keller's Ministries of Mercy: The Call of the Jericho Road, narrated by Sean Runnette, is this month's free audiobook at ChristianAudio. You can listen to on either your Kindle, MP3 player or an Apple device (you choose between DRM-Free MP3 or M4B format at download time).
Why would someone risk his safety, destroy his schedule, and become dirty and bloody to help a needy person of another race and social class? And why would Jesus tell us "Go and do likewise"? Like the wounded man on the Jericho road, there are needy people in our path- the widow next door, the family strapped with medical bills, the homeless man outside our place of worship. God call us to be ministers of mercy to people in need of shelter, assistance, medical care, or just friendship. Get your free audio download HERE; lower down on the order page, you'll find discounted ($4.98) downloads for a few related titles, including one that was on special at B&N and Fictionwise (but not on Kindle) last month, The Shape of Mercy ($9.29 Kindle; $9.99 B&N; $0.99 Fictionwise), by Susan Meissner (and, yes, it's still under a dollar at Fictionwise, but not Kindle compatible). Enter the coupon code AUG2010 during checkout. After you finishing your order, you will be asked which format you prefer to download - select MP3 if you want to be able to play the book on your Kindle. |

Oryx and Crake, by Margaret Atwood, is on sale for 99 cents in the Kindle store. This title is the follow-up to The Handmaid's Tale, which is still on sale for $3.95 (there are two editions; I linked in the one that I have, as the newer edition doesn't even have a publisher cover image; both are the same price, if someone wants to sample both and report any differences). If you want to read more of the series, The Year of the Flood is now out as well, and currently $8.69.
Book Description Margaret Atwood's classic novel The Handmaid's Tale is about the future. Now, in Oryx and Crake, the future has changed. As the story opens, the narrator, who calls himself Snowman, is sleeping in a tree, wearing a dirty old bedsheet, mourning the loss of his beautiful and beloved Oryx and his best friend Crake, and slowly starving to death. In a world in which science-based corporations have recently taken mankind on an uncontrolled genetic-engineering ride, he now searches for supplies in a wasteland. Insects proliferate and pigoons and wolvogs ravage the Pleeblands, where ordinary people once lived, and the Compounds that sheltered the extraordinary. As he tries to piece together what has taken place, the narrative shifts to decades earlier. How did everything fall apart so quickly? Why is Snowman left with nothing but his bizarre memories — alone except for the more-than-perfect, green-eyed Children of Crake, who think of him as a kind of monster? He explores the answers to these questions in the double journey he takes — into his own past and back to Crake’s high-tech bubble dome, where the Paradice Project unfolded and the world came to grief. With breathtaking command of her shocking material and with her customary sharp wit and dark humor, Atwood projects us into an outlandish yet wholly believable space populated by characters who will continue to inhabit your dreams long after the last chapter. This is Margaret Atwood at the absolute peak of her powers. From the Inside Flap A stunning and provocative new novel by the internationally celebrated author of The Blind Assassin, winner of the Booker Prize Margaret Atwood?s new novel is so utterly compelling, so prescient, so relevant, so terrifyingly-all-too-likely-to-be-true, that readers may find their view of the world forever changed after reading it. This is Margaret Atwood at the absolute peak of her powers. For readers of Oryx and Crake, nothing will ever look the same again. The narrator of Atwood's riveting novel calls himself Snowman. When the story opens, he is sleeping in a tree, wearing an old bedsheet, mourning the loss of his beloved Oryx and his best friend Crake, and slowly starving to death. He searches for supplies in a wasteland where insects proliferate and pigoons and wolvogs ravage the pleeblands, where ordinary people once lived, and the Compounds that sheltered the extraordinary. As he tries to piece together what has taken place, the narrative shifts to decades earlier. How did everything fall apart so quickly? Why is he left with nothing but his haunting memories? Alone except for the green-eyed Children of Crake, who think of him as a kind of monster, he explores the answers to these questions in the double journey he takes - into his own past, and back to Crake's high-tech bubble-dome, where the Paradice Project unfolded and the world came to grief. With breathtaking command of her shocking material, and with her customary sharp wit and dark humour, Atwood projects us into an outlandish yet wholly believable realm populated by characters who will continue to inhabit our dreams long after the last chapter. This is Margaret Atwood at the absolute peak of her powers. |

Well, we've all wondered (ok, at least I have) where the apps are, once Amazon released a developer's kit. It appears that two of them are now in the Kindle store and both are (currently free) games! The pictures show them being played on the newest Kindle, but I don't see any mention of which Kindle is required in the descriptions .... but, you can only purchase and download this title if you have a 2nd or 3rd generation Kindle or DX, it appears. Also, pick the kindle you send it to carefully. Unlike any books I've purchased, these can only be sent via whispernet once, it seems. After that, you'll have to transfer via USB cable to any of your other Kindle devices.
Every Word If you like word scrambles then Every Word is the game for you. Test your vocabulary as you try to find as many words from the scrambled letters in this fun and fast-paced word game. Here's how it works. You are given six or seven scrambled letters with the goal of finding as many words as you can. You score points by filling out the words in each empty spot on the board using only the letters that appear at the top of the game board. Keep at it until time runs out or until you fill up the board. The more words you make, the higher your score! Your score is comprised of two components: first make a lot of words, second try to make the longest word possible in each scramble. The best way to increase your score is to do both, but it's a huge bonus to find the longest word possible. Why? Because when you do, you earn the right to play a completely new level with a brand new set of letters. As long as you keep finding the longest word, you can move on to a new level with a new jumble of letters and push your score higher and higher. Shuffled Row Can you keep up with Shuffled Row? See how many words you can make from 60 lettered tiles. The tiles are added to your row one at a time so you'll constantly be working with a new set of letters. After you submit a word, the letters you used will be removed and new ones will be added. Increase your score by using less common letters. Create longer words and increase your score even more. If you don't use the letters fast enough, they'll disappear and new ones will take their place, so you'll have to decide if you want to play it safe and use short words or try to wait for more letters to form longer words. Test your vocabulary and how well you can think on your feet with Shuffled Row - try it today! |

Confessions of a Shopaholic, by Sophie Kinsella, is 99 cents this morning, on Kindle and in other ebookstores. The Kindle and Kobo editions mention containing an excerpt from her upcoming Mini Shopaholic ($9.99 pre-order) and from the file size, the B&N edition has it as well.
Book Description Rebecca Bloomwood just hit rock bottom. But she's never looked better.... Becky Bloomwood has a fabulous flat in London's trendiest neighborhood, a troupe of glamorous socialite friends, and a closet brimming with the season's must-haves. The only trouble is that she can't actually afford it -- not any of it. Her job writing at Successful Savings not only bores her to tears, it doesn't pay much at all. And lately Becky's been chased by dismal letters from Visa and the Endwich Bank -- letters with large red sums she can't bear to read -- and they're getting ever harder to ignore. She tries cutting back; she even tries making more money. But none of her efforts succeeds. Becky's only consolation is to buy herself something ... just a little something... Finally a story arises that Becky actually cares about, and her front-page article catalyzes a chain of events that will transform her life--and the lives of those around her--forever. Sophie Kinsella has brilliantly tapped into our collective consumer conscience to deliver a novel of our times -- and a heroine who grows stronger every time she weakens. Becky Bloomwood's hilarious schemes to pay back her debts are as endearing as they are desperate. Her "confessions" are the perfect pick-me-up when life is hanging in the (bank) balance. |

The Girl on the Beach, by Charles Todd, is the first of two free pre-orders in the Kindle store store tonight. This one is most likely a new short story or novella in the Bess Crawford Mystery series and will release at the same time as An Impartial Witness ($10.99), the second in the series, on releases Aug 31.
Mysterious Profile #24: Ian Rutledge, also by Charles Todd, is the second of two free pre-orders in the Kindle store store tonight. This one releases on October 12 and fits somewhere into the Ian Rutledge series (obviously), but again doesn't appear to be a full novel from that series. I'd bet that it was originally published in the Mysterious Bookshop's newsletter (although I could not find that issue, just the current on that mentions that the Mysterious Profile series is on hiatus). The next release in this series will be A Lonely Death, next January, but it isn't listed at Amazon yet. A special edition of Buddha, by Deepak Chopra, is free to pre-order in the Kindle store. The original edition is still selling for $10.99 and this one claims to contain bonus material. Based on the publication dates and the subject matter, I'd bet it is an excerpt from his upcoming title Muhammad: A Story of the Last Prophet ($10.99; available Sept 21). Book Description Bestselling author Deepak Chopra brings the Buddha back to life in this gripping novel of the young prince who abandoned his inheritance to discover his true calling. This iconic journey changed the world forever, and the truths revealed continue to influence every corner of the globe today. A young man in line for the throne is trapped in his father's kingdom and yearns for the outside world. Betrayed by those closest to him, Siddhartha abandons his palace and princely title. Alone and face-to-face with his demons, he becomes a wandering monk and embarks on a spiritual fast that carries him to the brink of death. Ultimately recognizing his inability to conquer his body and mind by sheer will, Siddhartha transcends his physical pain and achieves enlightenment. Although we recognize Buddha today as an icon of peace and serenity, his life story was a tumultuous and spellbinding affair filled with love and sex, murder and loss, struggle and surrender. From the rocky terrain of the material world to the summit of the spiritual one, Buddha captivates and inspires—ultimately leading us closer to understanding the true nature of life and our selves. |
