Calibre 0.6.31 to Kindle2 __ Error Connecting....

Hello all,
I'm new on this forum, and I need help.

First a little background. I use my PC (WinXP) with different USB devices
three to five times a week with no problems. Then I installed Calibre as tool
to use with my brand-new (Christmas present) Kindle2. Here is what is happening:

1) I installed Calibre on my PC and I loaded a couple of PDF files and downloaded, through Calibre, a Newsweek summary.

2) Next I converted the files to MOBI.

3) I connected the Kindle to my USB port the 'connection graphic' is displayed on the Kindle and the device graphic is displayed in Calibre
showing 1.4GB available.

4) When I 'click' on Calibre's device icon, all of my Kindle content is
displayed, as it should, WinFileExplorer sees Kindle, and the Kindle shows
up on the taskbar. All is perfect.

5) I then I open the 'Library' in Calibre, select a book, and 'click' the
'Send to Device' icon. Here is what happens:
A) The Kindle's connection graphic drops and the 'Home' page is displayed.

B) The Calibre 'Jobs' wheel starts turning, and sometimes after several
minutes 'Error Connecting to Device' is displayed in Calibre.

C) The icon is still in the Windows taskbar but when summoned it no
longer shows the device, and Kindle is missing from WinFileExplorer.

D) The Calibre 'Jobs' wheel keeps turning and nothing is happening.

E) I kill Calibre with WinTaskmanager, because Calibre complains with
"Cannot Kill Jobs that Communicate with the Device".

F) Win XP crashes and requires a hard re-boot to recover.

Its as if the Calibre 'de-mount switch' and the 'Send to Device switch' are being activated at the same time.

Do you think I have a bad, new cable, even though one direction works fine?
Isn't MOBI the correct format for Kindle?
Will the latest version (0.6.32) of Calibre help?

Goto preferences->advanced in calibre and click the device detection debug button. That may give us more information about what's wrong.

Debug device connection

The first time I tried the debug, the Kindle2's connection icon kept flashing
on and off alternating with the 'Home' screen. The second time, the Kindle2 icon stayed on. This is the information returned:

Nothing suspicious in that log, it does sound as though you have a problematic USB connection. I'd suggest trying 0.6.32 (it contains some optimizations for detection of devices on windows that may work around your problem as an unintended side effect)

Thank you so much for your help. However, I'm still having the same problem.
Even though all of my other four USB devices are working fine.

Device is recognized, device content is recognized, and device un-mount works perfectly. However, everytime I try to send a document to the Kindle2,
Windows locks up, big time as soon as I kill Calibre with the Win task manager.
USB Universal Drivers are:
Intel 82801EB Host Controller 24D2, 24D4, 24D7, 24DE, and 24DBD

I guess I'll start working on the email feature. I get it to work either.

This chipset is problematic with my EZReader V5 (on 3 XP systems).

Try this.
In the Device Manager of XP, find the line in the USB section that say USB2 Enhanced...
To be safe:eject any storage devices before changing the state
Right click and select disable. (lock into USB 1 mode)
Now try a transfer.

It Works!

That's it! Thank you! I disabled Intel driver 24DD, and Calibre now downloads to the Kindle2. My scanner, printer, Nikon D90, and my HDSD reader aren't real happy, but Calibre likes it..Interesting side note, earlier today I tried to copy and paste a MOBI file to Kindle/Doc using Windows File Explorer I was not able to do it. Windows responded
with the 'I don't know the path' excuse. I wonder if that will work now? Doesn't really
matter now. I'll be busy reading Newsweek...A big thanks to Kovidgoyal and Theduck.

I don't know what the real problem is, but it seems that it is no longer limited to just the Hanlin V5 based units.

If you have a spare PCI slot on you motherboard, locate an older USB 1.1 ONLY card (I found a cheap D-link DSB-500 at Frys for $12) and use that for your K2 and enable your USB2 mode for other stuff if you need the speed.

Windows File Explorer, like Calibre is also much happier with the USB2 driver disabled.
I just copied and pasted 160MB of MP3's from my PC to the K2. Problem identified and
workaround confirmed...Thanks to the members here....

I had this same problem the other day on my laptop. Everything was working fine for two days (I had just installed Calibre). Then my laptop wouldn't recognize my Kindle even with Calibre off and a fresh reboot. So I tried my kindle on my desktop and it worked fine. I called Amazon and they exchanged my unit. I got it today and my laptop recognized my new Kindle. But, now suddenly it doesn't. So...I'll still use Calibre on my laptop but just copy the files to my thumb drive and load them onto my Kindle through my desktop.

Didn't have a problem with the Kindle and my laptop until I installed Calibre, but I LOVE using Calibre!!
