Paperlike display running for 12 years and still going strong
Have you ever wondered how long a bistable display could retain its image? Keith Bellamy of Kent Displays was present at the SID 2006 conference in San Francisco where he demonstrated a monochrome display panel based on Kent's Cholesteric LCD (ChLCD) technology that has not been refreshed for 12 years. Most fascinating, the display shows no sign of image burn-in, ghosting, or other artifacts that would have been common with other display technologies after such a long time [Edit: As correctly pointed out by astfgl, from this example alone we cannot tell if that is indeed true, however, it's a claim made by the manufacturer which I like to believe it.]

This may be a silly question, but if it hasn't been refreshed for twelve years, how does anyone know if there's ghosting?

The only way is to refresh the display with a different image and see if it has ghosting and/or burn-in!
Or wait, what if ... just what if they had like 2 identical set and after 12 years, one of them is refreshed, and hence you know that it does not have ghosting and/or image burn-in, while the one that is not refreshed shows that it retains its contents perpetually. Man, they should get me to device demo plans and Proof-Of-Concepts. Last edited by Snappy!; 06-08-2006 at 10:27 PM. Reason: typo |
