I have tried (twice) to download metadata for 700 books this morning & both attempts have failed. The first after 40 minutes, the second after 50 minutes.

That will be your security software killing the calibre worker process because it finds so much network activity suspicious. Trying to download metadata for so many books at once wont work anyway because all the online servers will block/rate limit you.
