Kindle firmware 5.16.21 is released

Amazon has firmware 5.16.21 available for the 10th and 11th generation Kindles, Paperwhites and Oasis. The Scribe does not have this update available at the time this message is being written.

Going from 5.16.10 to 5.16.21 is odd. Kindle firmware version numbers are usually somewhat sequential.

Also bizarrely and maybe interesting is the fact that we now have two easily confusable versions 5.16.21 and 5.16.2.1.1

That's inherent in the (nearly universally used) version numbering scheme.

Probably a typo by some Lab126 dev that meant to write 5.16.11

I'm usually at the tailend of a rollout, so I was surprised to see the telltale restart this afternoon; it makes me think that it addresses the widespread reports of various bugs in the last update. I hope it fixes the freezing issue that necessitated a restart every day.

— fresh dev team. Old guys weren't as productive as management wanted, so they have new guys doing things, and they wanted to note the occasion

I got the application error immediately after the update installed.

This update did not solve the problem of the top menu not appearing when you try to exit the book. On the contrary, it introduced a new problem: when you try to open a book, a message saying 'Application Error' appears.
Just today, I had to restart twice: once because I couldn't exit the book, and another time because I couldn't open a book. I'm starting to hate my Kindle.

Here are some possible changes in the 5.16.21 firmware. As usual some of these features might not be fully implemented yet or may require remote enabling by Amazon.

Mention of a new Kindle device "11th generation, 2024 Release" along with new Mediatek device drivers.
Add the ability to encrypt the Kindle file system: "Your device content is not encrypted. Please update to the latest software version and factory reset your device. If you need further assistance, please contact customer service at www.amazon.com/devicesupport.", "Kindle encrypts the following data on this device to keep it secure:", "Your Kindle is encrypted", "To fully secure your device, we recommend setting a device PIN."
Inclusion of code related to handwritten annotations in non-Scribe firmware. Might just be to simplify the code base.
More work toward a new method of storing annotations on the device.
Possible annotation types: highlight, outline, underline.
Two column layout for the AA menu.

The main thing I have already noticed is that the preference of both my PW11 and Kindle 11 is so much faster.
