Can't find and download metadata anymore
I am new here so, if I'm posting this in the wrong place, I apologize.
I have been using Calibre for a few years, without problems. Recently (several weeks), however, everytime I try to download metadata, I receive the "ERROR: No matches found" message. I am at version 3.27.1, on Windows 10. I am in Canada. I would greatly appreciate any help. Thank you. Here is the log: Spoiler:

I just did the same search here are my results. Spoiler:
You can go to Calibre Preferences - Plugins - Metadata source plugins - Amazon.com - customize plugin and choose a different country, could be Amazon has blocked you. Alternatively you could choose different servers to scrape the data. Additionally you can add other metadata source plugins. If you review my log you'll see I have the following plugins downloading metadata Barnes & Noble Goodreads Fantastic Fiction Kobo Books Amazon.com Overdrive You can go to Calibre Preferences - Plugins - Get new plugins to add other sources for downloading metadata. These plugins are described in the Index of plugins sticky post at the top of the Plugins forum. Good Luck. Last edited by DoctorOhh; 07-10-2018 at 08:29 PM. |

Thank you for your reply.
1) Indeed, I appear to be running version 2.31. PS C:\Users\Maria> calibredb --version Qt: Untested Windows version 10.0 detected! calibredb.exe (calibre 2.31 [64bit]) Also, in the Calibre window I am told "Update found: 3.27.1" This leaves me confused, since I ran calibre-64bit-3.27.1.msi without any problems and when I try to run it again I get the options to Change - Repair - Remove, so the 3.27.1 seems to be installed. I am lost... 2) When it comes to the metadata sources: - I am in Canada, but I do not have a choice of Amazon for Canada. I used the default (US) and it used to work - now it does not. I tried Germany and France - failure. - I also tried Google by itself and Overdrive by itself - failure in both cases. the ISBN has a red "X" next to it. - I will try to see about using a plugin and report back Of course, the most frustrating thing is that it used to work and now it does'n, although I have changed nothing, just applied updates when told to I am very grateful for any help you may continue to offer. |

It looks almost as if you have two instances of calibre installed or the installation of 3.27.1 is being blocked.
When you look in Apps and Features, does it show only one instance of calibre installed? You can also try opening a command prompt and typing "where calibredb.exe" without the quotes and hit enter. This should return "C:\Program Files\Calibre2\calibredb.exe" for the normal install. This does assume that the path to the calibre executables is in the system path variable. Code:
C:\Users\David>where calibredb.exe C:\Program Files\Calibre2\calibredb.exe C:\Users\David>where calibre.exe C:\Program Files\Calibre2\calibre.exe C:\Users\David>where where.exe C:\Windows\System32\where.exe Last edited by DNSB; 07-11-2018 at 02:00 PM. Reason: fat fingers cause typos... |

If I do, I can't find any trace of it. Not in Apps and Features, nor through cmd.
:\Users\Maria>where calibre.exe :\Program files\Calibre2\calibre.exe |

You maybe need admin rights. Start cmd with admin rights, type "set" or "path" and hit enter in the cmd window. You will get a report about your environment variables. Take a look to the "Path=" section. There should be an entry like
C:\Program Files\Calibre2\ or C:\Program Files (86)\Calibre2\ for calibre if you have a local installation. If not, you probably run a portable version with a linked program icon. You can right-click this link and look for its properties. |

More testing. Tried to download (or re-download) metadata for some books that have been in my database for a while. Results were inconclusive: it worked for some, did not for others. Then I had to instal the latest Windows Updates (nothing special, just today's updates). Continued testing metadata download: miracle! Now it works for most those I tried and if not, repeating the attempt with only author's last name and one word of the title produced desired result!
How did that happen??? Last edited by Maria Loranger; 07-11-2018 at 06:05 PM. |

Did you uninstall calibre and then re-install it to see if this fixed your issues with the version not updating? |

As DNSB mentioned, you should really reinstall calibre. Download the actual installation from the official site https://calibre-ebook.com/download_windows64 For the following action take care you user account have admin rights. Uninstall calibre via control panel ->programs, boot your system (usually not needed but just in case...), make a new installation and allow all activities for calibre if there is a request from your security software. ---- By the way, there was going something with what DNSB mentioned to you. The command "where" should give you a result, as there is an active installation. Maybe a typo or a restricted user account. You can check this if you like. Copy this one in your cmd window with admin rights and hit enter: where /F /T calibre*.* This should show you all files with time stamp and locations starting with the name calibre (usually 8 files). |

Thank you so much for all your help!
Yes, I shall reinstall Calibre, after uninstalling it and cleaning everything, including the registry. In the meantime, this is the result of the "where" command: Microsoft Windows [Version 10.0.17134.165] (c) 2018 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved. Continuing saga
I went through the whole procedure of removing Calibre and cleaning.
- I removed existing Calibre (through Programs and Features) - I ran CCleaner - I cleaned the Registry (with CCleaner) - I restarted my laptop - I downloaded Calibre again (for Windows 10, 64 bit) When I attempted to install Calibre again and I obtained the message : "The installer has insufficient privileges to modify this file: C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\calibre 64bit - E-book Management\calibre 64bit - E-book Management.lnk. " I have never seen this message before aand I don't know what it means, so I stopped the installation. - I manually removed all traces of Calbre (Registry, folders) - I ran a quick anti-virus scan I downloaded Calibre again rom the same page (https://calibre-ebook.com/download_windows64), attempted to install it and got the same error message ("The installer has insufficient privileges ...). Cancelled the installation. Downloaded Calibre again, but this time from https://calibre-ebook.com/download_windows (so, I presume, it's 32 but?). This version installed and loaded the Calibre Library without any problems. I would appreciate any comments. Thank you, ML |
