Capek, Karel: War with the Newts. v1. 27 Aug 2007

"War with the Newts" is an sci-fi novel written by Czech author Karel Čapek. An intelligent species of salamander is discovered in Indonesia, and is quickly exploited. First, as pearl divers and eventually practically replacing the human workforce.
The book is an amusing satire of the society and politics of the 1930s.

A good read, if a bit unusual.

Čapek also coined the word "robot" in his play "R.U.R."(Rossum's Universal Robots) to mean automaton. In the original Czech, "robota" means drudgery or servitude.

The Czech republic has a very rich literary heritage in the 20th century. Thank you for making available a hard to find work.

I simply love the format - very sharp, clean, with book/chapter at the bottom of every page. Very slick set-up.

Thanks.
I did have some problems with the footnotes. If you go to the footnotes, return to the original page using history instead of clicking on the return link.

Thanks - I'll remember that. What program did you use to format? Not that I'm at that level yet (more of a lurker/reader still), but when I find something I want on my reader, I'd like it to look like this book.

BenG, would you mind making a Mobipocket format eBook and an IMP format eBook as well if possible? Thanks!

Oo, I second that! I read this book years ago (in an Unwin Unicorn edition, I believe) and thought it weird and wonderful. I'd love to read it again when my Iliad arrives...

What settings should I use for the IMP conversion?

I also get a warning when converting to IMP: "the book contains symbols which are not supported by the device. Do you want to switch on the MultiLang support?"

When you get that dialog, select No. Then you will be able to make the IMP edition in text.
