epub file too large?

I'm working to combine shorter stories into 'collections' so that I have all the connected stories in a series in one file. This has been great.

I just finished one, closed the file, then realized I forgot to have Sigil generate a TOC and now Sigil won't open the file. It just crashes as soon as it tries. It'll open other files, but not this one.

Is there a file size maximum?

I'm on Windows 11, using Sigil 2.3.0

I've opened and edited a 800MB epub file with Sigil without issues. Can you try opening the epub with a zip utility ( I use 7Zip under Windows) and see if it reports any errors. As a last resort, you can extract the files into a temp directory and then insert them into a new ePub document in Sigil.

Remember there's a difference between a huge epub with a lot of reasonably sized xhtml files, and a huge epub with a few giant-sized files. The latter will always cause slowdowns. But not crashes in my experience.

Sigil should never crash. Could you have run out of memory or disk space?

Try the following as a workaround:

1. manually unzip the epub using your favorite unzipping/archive tool
2. Use the FolderIn plugin to navigate to your unzipped folder and ask it to load the unpacked/unzipped epub files.
3. Save to new epub with new name.
