Additional Goals: 24th Jan: I've scrapped my original two awards challenges, because I've signed up for many more challenges over at Worlds Without End. 9 so far, I think. I'll leave the tracking there. They will include at least one winner from each of these awards, however. 1. Locus SF award. This muscled ahead of the BSFA in my priorities when I realised how few books I had left to read, and how many of them I already owned. There are 8 to go at the start of 2014. Spoiler:
2. BSFA award winners (at least 1). Continued from 2013. At the start of 2014 I have 22 to read, but I don't expect to read them all this year. Spoiler:
3. The ABC Murders (at least 8). Alphabetical challenge based on detective names. Continued from 2013. I was originally intending to split this over 3 years, but I might now try to finish in 2014. There are 15 remaining at the start of the year. Spoiler:

Goal: Read 75 books in 2014
Being a geneticist in training and profession, I have always been more than slightly wary of philosophy -- I intend to change that and read at least 5 philosophy books in 2014.
January 1. In the Shadow of Man by Jane Goodall I had read later books by her, but never the story of the start of the project. A classic, and highly recommendable, even though some of the research and certainly the employed methods are dated. 7/10 2. Gaining Ground: A Story of Farmers' Markets, Local Food, and Saving the Family Farm by Forrest PritchardA good, honest book. More about markets and less about farm than I liked, but nothing less than promised. Definitely recommended to those interested in food and agricultural politics. 7/10 3. The Village Against The World by Dan HancoxA flourishing communist endeavor in crisis bitten capitalist and royalist Spain, what can be a better subject for a successful journalist from the Guardian? I don't quite know, but I hope there are some, because this book by Hancox was a severe disappointment. by
Hancox writing style and story-line are rather tiring, there's no chronological or other order with regards to the chapter outline, nor within the chapters. There's a lot of jumping back and forth, with as logical consequence both omissions and repetitions all over the place. The most disturbing, however, is the lack of objectivity towards Marinaleda's major, Gordillo. Without doubt a charismatic leader, his flaws and political scheming are either not discussed at all, or brushed aside. When one reads between the lines, and does some further research, it turns out that the success of Marinaleda rather depends on governments subsidies than the collective farm and associated collective industries that employ most of the village citizens. As briefly mentioned in the book, work at the farm of industries depends on active participation on unpaid Red-Sunday labor for the 'collective good'. Many of the practices described in the book are a more than subtle reminder of a Stalinist society (fortunately without the Gulags, but with the intimidation). And indeed, the book seems to fit in nicely as Stalinist propaganda. 3/10 Last edited by Soldim; 01-06-2014 at 10:17 AM. |

Victim of Geography: Read books from different countries
I read way too many books written by authors from the United States and the United Kingdom. The top six countries in my reading are:
United States - 189, United Kingdom - 105, Canada - 37, Japan - 9, Ireland - 8 , India - 8 As sad as that is for my home country of Canada, I'm more concerned with the having only read books from 24 countries at present. I'm about to remedy that situation and start along an epic 70 country, 143729km journey through the world by books. Join my thread over at GoodReads for all the discussion of books and nonsense that comes with the journey. Statistics Spoiler:

Goal: Track my reading.
My challenge in 2014 will be to keep track of what I read, try to keep the number of "active" series down and finish the challenge I started in 2013 of reading a book published in every year since I was born. I haven't made much headway with that last challenge in 2013 and still need to read 26 books for that.
As an unofficial challenge I want to read some of the longer books that I've bought but never read. I've set up a page on my blog where I keep track of my reading and challenges: Bianca's Reading Challenge 2014 Last edited by pdurrant; 12-29-2013 at 04:07 AM. |

Magazines 2 read so far Spoiler:
$$ spent $40.00/month Currently $87.53 Over Spoiler:
Books Read January 001. 3/5 Philly Stakes - Gillian Roberts Cozy mystery. Good read, but lacks the wit of the first 2 in series. SciFi Thriller. Reads like a screenplay, a little predictable, but I loved it. Scifi - Enjoyed. Good plot. Predates Vorkosigan saga by centuries. Still love it after all these years. Funny story. Look forward to next book. Great book. Good balance between drama and funny. Liked the movie better, but worthy of a read. Loved it. However, the first 1/3 was so slow, it was hard to push through. Excellent mystery. Ending was a bit of a mishmash for me. Dresden takes a case to solve a murder. His first mistake. Great book! Humorous but selfish characters & screwy plot got old. 40% read and abandoned. Good story, but you do need to suspend belief some. 013. 5/5 Death Masks - Jim Butcher (audio) Fast pace, lots of action. Compelling story. This one read like a thriller. Exciting! English mystery series involving a Vicar. A little slow, chatty, but I liked it. Good story. Suspenseful. Good story. Original ideas ruined with porn and bad plot. Great story! Looking forward to the rest of series. Great story. Plot started strong & gets skewed towards the end. Totally loved this. This was very suspenseful! Loved it. The mystery is lukewarm. I was bored through the first half. It did pick up later on. 025. 5/5 Dead Beat - Jim Butcher (audio) I give this a 4.5. Good plot, good characters. Hard to put down. Good plot, good characters. Very enjoyable. I enjoyed it. The first half was pretty funny. Great detective novel. Hard to put down. Another good mystery cozy. Good story. Lots of wit. Great story. Love the horror movie inclusion. Good swift story. Plenty of wit and issues. Some plot flaws. The mystery was good. The interaction of characters dull. Good story. 035. 4/5 With Friends Like These - Gillian Roberts Great story, but I think the author made Amanda unusually stupid in this book. Very exciting but more focus on vampire war than 'cases' Another exciting story & switch from PI to Warden Funny, short, good afternoon witchy read. No humor, no wit, and no research. I finally skipped to the end. Adventurous, sword & sorcery with a half human Good story but not exceptional. Lots of great Dresden short stories. 043. 5/5 Mort - Terry Pratchett (audio) Absolutely hilarious. Keeper. A favorite Regency romance from the 70s. Not quite Heyer. Wonderful alien contact story from point of view of the alien Still love this story. Flat characters, LOTR Lite, and all. Not enough action for me, but a good story. Excellent. Not as much action until near end, but very chatty Loved this story in my early 20s. The reread was excellent. 050. 5/5 Changes - Jim Butcher (audio) VERY exciting book! Still great many years later. Different perspective to read a book 20 some years later. A transition book with some poor plot lines. I like this story despite its problems Average book. Kindof depressing. Still, good elements and action. This was a GREAT book! Every short story worth reading. 057. 5/5 Cold Days - Jim Butcher (audio) Exciting. Excessive smart aleck remarks, but ignoring that, enjoyable. It was ok. I'm not a fan of apocalyptic fiction. This was a great book! Worthy read. I see why a lot of people love this book. Relisten. Still like it despite unlikely scenes. Totally loved this Mystery cozy. Fun read. Love this series. Enjoyable book. Not quite as good as earlier ones in the series. Great story! Another great story! And it features a cat! Great story involving antique dealers. 069. 5/5 The Warrior's Apprentice - Lois McMaster Bujold (audio) Lots of humor and action in this. Quirky plot. Funny mystery cozy This was an excellent story. Good collection of ghost stories. Canterville Ghost, my favorite. Very enjoyable and funny Regency Romance from the 70s. Just couldn't believe that former soldier's wouldn't have ACTED earlier. Campy zombie humor. Funny Regency Romance Private eye based on Boston in Mid-70s. Good, short novel! Lots of intrigue. Lots of characters. Good story. Regency romance with some stronger female characters This was GREAT! I regret putting it off so long to listen to! Mystery Cozy set in WW2 dockyards. Granny Weatherwax and the other witches were hilarious!! 083. 4/5 Hexed - Kevin Hearne (audio) Not a believable plot, but I love it anyway. More treachery. Funny, funny, though I preferred Tony Robinson's version of Teppic. Imperfect Duke placed as villain in a book. Good read, but more romance than mystery cozy. Excellent story, but rather sad. Snappy comments makes this a great cozy. Set in Gulf Coast. 090. 5/5 Under the Dome - Stephen King (audio) Long story but great pace and interesting throughout. Good read but didn't hold my attention as much as first 2 books. Another good cozy mystery. Lots of dacquiri recipes at the end. This was hilarious, as usual Good story. Murder mystery Great, but I prefer the TV version Very funny, but compared to other Discworld novels, just average. 097. 3/5 Stories To Read Late At Night - Alfred Hitchcock Some great stories. Some average. Great regency romance. Very funny. 1st person recruit. Loved the audio version! Good blend between technology and adventure. Hilarious with a lot of commentary on the war machine. Great book! Hard to believe it is still great many years later. Regency romance - not as funny as some of her books. 104. 3/5 Letty - Clare Darcy Not as funny as her other works. Hilarious. Keeper. Funny cozy. I gave it a 4 because it's short and made me laugh. She tells it like it is. Although I am not wealthy or live in NYC, I enjoyed. Case with a kidnapping. Good with some issues. Author uses too many modern issues in a Regency novel. Disappointed. Mystery was fine, but more about lives of the detectives. Several good stories, several GREAT stories. Never read this when I was younger. Loved the audiobook! Repeated attempts at killing the groom before the wedding. 115. 4/5 Doctor Who & The Daleks - David Whitaker Just as crazy as the show. Good characters. Plot was choppy Legend: 1 No interest, didn't finish or hated. 2 It didn't completely suck. Enjoyed some of it. 3 Average. Enjoyed reading. 4 Really enjoyed. Might read again. 5 Among the best read this year. Keeper. Would read again. Series In Death Spoiler:

75 books in 2014
For now, my challenge is simply to read 75 books in 2014. I will add some specific challenges once I get my head round what they are . One thing I am going to do is keep track of pages read, as I've never bothered with that before.
EDIT: I am including novellas and some short stories in my book count, balanced by some books which are around 600 pages. So my secondary challenge is to average the page count to about 300 pages overall. Goal: 150 books in 2014
I've already joined Roof Beam Reader's 2014 challenge, which is to read a dozen specific books that you've owned for at least a year. Two alternates are permitted, and I'm still finalizing the complete list over on Goodreads.
As for my main challenge, it looks like I'm on track to hit 152 books for 2013. Normally, that would mean setting my 2014 goal to 150-160, but I haven't decided yet. I may start doing some writing, if the ideas I've got firm up, and that costs reading time. I'll be joining the Goodreads challenge to track the main list, as I have for the past couple of years. Total goal: 150. Finished: These. Now reading: This. RBR challenge: At least 12 of these. Early March update Total progress: 27/150 read (on track) RBR progress: 9/12 read, 10th started. Should finish the challenge this month. Honorable mention: Replaced several physical books with ebooks. Last edited by pdurrant; 04-01-2014 at 02:12 PM. Reason: March update. |
