color ereader 8-10"
Looking for the most reliable and best value color ereader 8-10"
Im starting a new job and theres alot of material to read - lots of graphs data etc which requires different colors to identify and not greyscale. Any recommendations? I have a boyue b/w 10" reader so i was thinking of getting a 8" color if theres a big difference in price between 8" and 10" in color. Had a quick look and bigme seems like a big player. But is it worth getting a onyx? (had a bad experience with the 10" boyue with a dead battery). I'll pay the extra $$ for reliability instead of having a $500 paperweight in a year or two. Thanks |

I don't know much about the Android color eInk tablets, so the only 8" (7.8") reader that comes to mind is the PocketBook InkPad Color.

At the moment there are no devices that can use colors properly and a color resolution of 100 dpi at best is unacceptable in my opinion Last edited by ottischwenk; 12-13-2022 at 08:45 AM. |

Also only about 4000 shades/hues compared to 16 M, but the poor colour and contrast may not matter for charts or comics.

Onyx is the only one I know, and I thought they only do 7.8", but I may be behind the times. The text will be less clear than on a B/W screen, but that is true of all color e-ink. Regarding battery, it was a relatively simple process to change the battery on my Nova. You could order a battery and put it away. When the battery eventually dies, take the device and battery into a tech guy and get him to swap it out for you, or do it yourself. Personally I am finding more and more that DIY battery replacement is a reality for modern devices.

PocketBook is launching a new 8" colour device with an E Ink Gallery 3 display.

It isn't traditional eink if it doesn't use a filter for colour, even if called eInk.
It's made by the E Ink company but isn't eInk, it's Advanced Color ePaper (ACeP™). Quote:
https://www.eink.com/color-technology.html I'd take any info on other sites with a bucket of salt. It's using four layers of Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and White (black) so will be considerably dimmer than real eink mono, but brighter for same light as the higher saturation filtered eink. It's very slow at about 3/4 to 1 second, or 1.5 seconds for full colour. Even fast mode colour is 1/2 second. Mono is a little slower than 1/3rd second. https://www.businesswire.com/news/ho...tomer-Launches I wonder who the other six major manufacturers are? Kindle? Kobo? Barnes & Noble? Galy, a kickstarter project. https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/bigme/galy
(It seems that BadEreader is involved somehow, which takes away any interest I had.) |

EDIT: This site says that there will be only 1,500 colors and that there will a be a speed penalty for running at "full color." Also mentions other companies who have been known to sign on. (No mention of Kindle, Kobo or Barnes & Noble). https://liliputing.com/pocketbook-vi...oming-in-2023/ Last edited by rcentros; 12-14-2022 at 06:41 AM. |

This is a great development, and I very much look forward to these devices. To me, however, they are practically useless in the sub-10" category. The only reason I'd want colour is to read comics on an e-ink device, which has long been a dream of mine. But for that I'd need at least 10", if not 13". But it'll be interesting watching the development from the sidelines. For now, I'm more interested in a good 10" 300 PPI device. |

There is a 13.3″ panel.
Web page seems pale grey on white, nearly unreadable. https://shopkits.eink.com/product/at...play-ac133ut1/ So full colour is only about 50,000 (vs 16,700,000 for LCD/OLED/LED without HDR) and 1.5 second refresh. The fast colour is only twice as fast at best and 1,500 colours. Seems better suited to signage & advertising than an ereader. Edit: Copy & paste to text editor Quote:

I don't think these screens will appeal to people who use (and like) tablets for reading -- but it will probably appeal to those who either like (or could like, if it was a bit better) than the Kaleidoscope E-Ink screens. This might be a nice step up for them. Side by side they look significantly better. I have no idea if the performance issues would get in the way or not. Personally I don't need (and am not looking for) a way to read books in color on an E-Ink device. Definitely wouldn't use an LED tablet for this either. I thought I was referencing the Gallery 3. The Gallery Plus seems earlier
