You Know Your Gadget Is Mainstream When...

...someone you don't know stops you and asks you to compare walking while reading an eReader to walking while reading a book.

Has anyone else found a reason to feel mainstream at last?

Haven't quite gotten there yet...ebook readers are not too popular in the countries they're made in.

I think I'll consider it "mainstream" when people pester me about what book I'm reading, rather than about the device I'm using to read with.

How about seeing an e-book reader on QVC just before Christmas?

That probably goes to illustrate the cultural difference between different countries. In Britain, to approach a total strange on the street, and talk to them (unless you wanted to ask directions, or something like that) would be utterly unthinkable. People just don't do it. Ever.

Back in 2007 I was in the Lake District of England and sitting waiting for a train back to Scotland when a couple of boys approached me full of questions about the Sony I was reading on. I was quite impressed at how interested they were in reading (they were around 12 or 13). That is until they asked me what language we speak in Australia

Should tell them you speak European. Food for thought.

They obviously hadn't yet acquired their proper "British reserve" at that young age .

I too was once asked by a kid at an SF convention in the US what language we spoke in England .

when is it in the mainstream? as I used at another place on this site week before last; the security people at the gate use "any electronic device larger than a Kindle" when describing what must be taken out of your carry on luggage to be closely inspected
