I'm trying to download software from Apprentice Alf, but I'm getting a warning from my AVG protection that Alf's stuff contains Adware. Is it safe to ignore this and continue?

I got no such warning when I downloaded a couple of weeks ago. Are you following the instructions on his blog page? It looks like he's fully aware that his hosting site sticks all kind of stuff around the download and he's very specific on what to do to avoid it:

I saw his instructions, and appreciated the fact that he was trying to make them as clear as possible. I think I've followed them, and twice I was getting this warning about Adware.

False positive. The plugins come in a standard ordinary ZIP file which contain a ZIP file for the plugin.

Turn off your anti-virus or better yet, get one that works properly and dump the junk you have now as it obviously doesn't work well.

I just install http://adblockplus.org and never see ads. Specifically, I don't see the datafilehost ads, and the only download button is the .zip of the tools.
(I don't use NoScript.)

Assuming you got a .zip you should be golden, although you could verify by checking the md5 checksums provided directly from Alf.

AdblockPlus makes it much easier to do things without having to worry about dealing with this garbage.

that is a good solution - so long as you don'e install one of the many fake, malware infested adblock plus extensions from the google chrome extensions store. google takes them down frequently but allows new ones to spring up

It's like the challenge we started with - how do you find the one genuine download link which is a page full of fake ones.

Most of the "use our downloader" adware /malware is either avaoidable - if you carefully read each installer screen before clicking or not, and is allegedly removable via add/remove programs. the sites that offer up this infestd crap make that latter claiom anyway.
