Early Carolyn Wells detective novel (1923), not part of a series.

In New York's Washington Square bohemian district, artists and the quality mingle; and at a costume dance, a woman is murdered. Although everyone is supposed to know everyone else, the victim is a stranger.

I couldn't find an original dust cover, so created this one, using a detail from the Argosy magazine cover which carried the serial in 1923, and which showed a moment from the story.
