Wood, Mrs Henry: East Lynne, v.1, 1 March 2008.
Ellen Wood always published under the name of ‘Mrs Henry Wood.’
‘East Lynne’ was an incredibly popular medodramatic novel, first published in 1861. This text is from an 1883 edition. The famous line, “Dead!—and never called me ‘Mother’!” is actually from a stage adaptation. This is a story of a young wife who is seduced and abandoned. After a disfiguring accident she takes a post as governess in her former husband’s house, so as to be near her children. (There is also a sensational sub-plot.) This storyline was later adapted for the film ‘Mrs Doubtfire’. This work is assumed to be in the Life+70 public domain OR the copyright holder has given specific permission for distribution.
