ebook reader / netbook tablet recommendations wanted
Hello,
I've just bought a Sony PRS-505 to explore the ereader market. However, what I really want is a device like the iRex DR1000SW (unavailable). I also seem to notice a large number of complaints about the DR series, so I think I'll pass. But... I must admit, the DR1000SW comes the closest to exactly what I want right now. Here are my needs: It should provide full page PDF viewing while taking touch and pen input for annotations. I principally need it to manipulate technical and academic documents - published papers - in PDF form. I'll gladly pay more than $1000 if this device cuts out the many pounds of books and printed papers I carry in my shoulder bag daily. A standard laptop with keyboard won't do it because it doesn't show a page in standard A4/A5 format. epaper is nice, but honestly what I need is the format of a 10" slate - so LCD solutions are fine by me as well. Any suggestions? |

A convertable netbook may be what you a re looking for. Asus is apparently about to introduce two of them, there is also the Gigabyte Touchnote T1028M and Intel's Classmate PC "tablet". Note that these are running Windows XP Home, not Windows XP Tablet PC Edition. Vista has more support for tablet stuff (i.e. it is already a "tablet edition), but requires a more powerful computer. Battery life is always something to watch out for.

Thanks for these suggestions. I would much prefer a slate over a convertible tablet. kwjones' suggestion for that preview slate looks like a potential winner. Also, I'm a Linux old-timer, I'd have no trouble managing my own Linux install. Though XP Tablet edition is probably good enough. Vista and Win 7 are non-starters for this type of hardware.

After further reading today, it looks the Crunchpad is only for wifi web browsing. No pen input. Not sure how much tweaking you would have to do depending on hardware specs.

Hi
What you want is: 1 - a Motion slate tabletpc http://www.motioncomputing.com/produ...et_pc_le17.asp or a 2 - Sahara slate tabletpc http://www.tabletkiosk.com/products/sahara/i400s_pp.asp And if it even as nothing to do with it, one can see them on TV series: CSI NY (1) and Stargate Atlantis (2). You get also the computer you will need for your studies and plus the possibility to take your course notes on them = one machine covers it all. I use tabletpc’s in my business, meetings, classes I assist and classes I teach since 2003… also I’m writing this post in one - the Toshiba M200, kicking 365 days per year since early 2005 and still strong! Good shopping, |

DDHarriman: Those are both good options. The price is about $2K, a bit more than I want to pay. And I already have a MacBook, so I don't need a laptop. However, those links <b>are</b> the closest thing I've seen to what I want short of the DR1000SW. Thanks a bunch for your suggestions.
