Toronto! Summer! Yay! (Toronto, Canada)
At least 4 of us were talking earlier in the year about a Toronto meet-up, perhaps in mid-July or early August. So, let's get things underway I am going to follow the instructions exactly from the sticky...
* To propose a meet-up, create a thread in the lounge. Done! Now, as for venues, I am more than willing for anyone to suggest. I have had some good luck in the past with the What a Bagel at Yonge and Eglinton for things like this. It is roughly in the middle of the subway line (in a city like ours, not everyone is a driver; I think a subway-accessible venue is a must for things like this!) and it has a nice mix of real food for those so inclined and tiny cheap treats for those on a budget. But as I said, this is just a starting point and if someone else would like to propose a venue, please do not feel inhibited that I have already suggested one. * Use the "Meet-Up!" thread prefix !! Alex made it specially so your meet-up will be easily visible. Done. Note my use of exclamation marks, too, so my thread will be nice and visible and make everyone want to come to our awesome meet-up. * Location, location, location ! Toronto, city of at least 4 Mobile Read members who have said they might come to a meet-up! Canada, land of no Kindles so how impressed would we be if someone came to the meet-up with one! * give one to two months' notice !! some people have really full calendars When this was talked about before, people seemed to think 'summer' was a good range to work with. If any tourists who plan to visit Toronto for one of our many festivals respond, we can try and arrange it so the meet-up happens then. * Tell a mod when things start taking shape (look for the names in green) and we will make an official announcement so nobody misses it ! Will do! Update forthcoming when the date shapes up. * BRING YOUR DEVICE if you have one. more than one is encouraged ! More than one? Hmm, do I trust them to behave themselves together? * Planning to come ? reply in the thread, and mention which device you will bring.* I of course will come, with my Sony Reader and iPod Touch. I can bring my Alphasmart Dana if people want to see it (it comes with a special version of Palm Reader pre-installed which is optimized for the wide screen) but I don't read on that device, myself. So? We in? Who's coming? |

Ok, Google maps says it's 5 hours, 43 minutes away from my home... I seriously have no idea if I'll make it there. Probably not, to be frank, but I'm dreaming hard here, and I really hope something will work out!
Ishhh, it's a 5 hours train ride but a 8:30 hours bus ride... |

I really liked Toronto when I was there. Beautiful city. Too bad I won't be able to make it (and I agree with Z, we really need a transporter here at MR!) |

Toronto is in the province right next to mine, and I never been that far west (ti-hi!). It's great that you had a chance to visit it! |

I once went to Halifax and drove to Quebec, Montreal (or did we go to Ottawa? I'd have to check) on to Toronto, Niagara Falls, and via the US back to New Brunswick and back to Halifax. Awesome trip! And I'd love to do the cross-country too. Rent a camper in Halifax, and deliver it to Vancouver... |

I hope you can justify making a "trip" to Toronto (Ontario). We are very multicultural and embrace diversity. Oh, and also, most times, we are just too damn polite ... I've had the chance to visit Quebec a few times; for work and pleasure. As an accounting student, on a work-term, I had to fly from Toronto to Montreal before 9:00 am to verify some financial records held at CDS (Canadian Depository of Securities) and was (unfortunately) forced to fly back after 6:00 pm the same day. I did make it back, on summer vacation though, to visit the Olympic Stadium (before it deteriorated ). Other times when visiting Ottawa, we've made a mad dash for the Casinos in Hull (this was before Ontario got them too, Casinos, that is ). I (with wife and kids) drove to Mont Tremblant a few years ago and it was almost surreal to drive from Ontario into Quebec and see the culture (and language) change so drastically. I've been exposed to some European flair, with my Italian heritage, so I was at least familiar with the customs. Unfortunately, since I didn't learn any more than grammar school French, I felt less than functional when outside the Montreal area. I guess I can visit, but ex-nay on the stay-ay! |

I would love to go but Toronto is to far away and I have no time or cash to make a holiday of it! Hope the planning goes well and hope you have a great turn out.
Friends of mine just started a cross Canada trip. They left BC on Thursday, made a stop at our place for supper on Saturday and are presently in Manitoba. They are going all the way out to PEI and then back again through the USA. They have planned it to take 8 weeks and are doing it in there Ford Flex and a tent trailer. Oh and it's 4 girls ages 3 - 13 plus mom and dad. Talk about ambitous |

Surprisingly Nick, after Montréal, the Laurentian (Mont-Trembant) region is the most bilingual area in Québec! Just take me along next time, I'll be your official translator (yay, free trip!)
And the Olympic Stadium is in perfect shape! (ahem...) It has never caused any problems and is a great symbol of Montréal's ability to deal with great projects! (it's such a lie it almost hurts tipping it!) I'll try to figure something out though, a meet-up in my own country is a great occasion to take a little trip! (Dad? Daaad!) Off topically: Mike, my dad, my brother and I made a road trip to New-Brunswick when I was a kid and I'll never forget the experience! I'm sure it will be the same for your friends kids...if the family ever comes back in one piece! |

Oh crap, people are so mean here sometimes when it comes to language (English, really)! We're not all like that, I swear! Come back and buy some more stamps, I'll help you out, I'll be there, you'll like us!
Hey, you could come around meet-up time, that would be great! |

Fresh out of holiday... And next year it'll be Hawaii (though I still have to convince my husband for that). But I'd love to go back to Canada again. Mostly friendly people and a very beautiful country (even though the part between Montreal (or was that Ottawa?) and Toronto looked just like home

Gosh, I'd love to go. I was in Toronto once but only remember being scared witless looking down from the CN tower and also seeing chicken feet in a chinatown market. The rest is a blur. I hope to be in Québec City sometime this year but, as usual, I have no clue when. I'll be keeping this in mind, though.
