WSJ: How Low Will E-Reader Prices Go?

http://blogs.wsj.com/digits/2010/07/...der-prices-go/

Quote:
A small manufacturer already plans to introduce a $99 device this fall. Copia, a subsidiary of DMC Worldwide, is set to offer a $99, 5-inch color e-reader when its line of devices comes to market later this year.
Quote:
Copia sells books in the standard Epub format. The number of digital books available for purchase through Copia’s e-commerce site is said to be around 400,000, not including public domain titles, according to Mr. Antolino. Amazon’s Kindle store currently has more than 650,000 book available for download.
Interesting-how did Copia get such a large library?

And where is it? Their website shows a half a dozen eInk readers, but no ebooks, and no five inch color reader.

It looks a lot like vaporware to me!

We'll see.
I think the Kobo almost has to lower their price now as both the WiFi nook at $149 and the new Wi Fi Kindle at $139 will kill their sales. Can they afford to do so? I don't know.

So far Amazon seems to be saying "Set your lowest price and then we'll beat you by $10" and I can't imagine Barnes and Noble and/or Kobo having the financial reserves to take that on .... maybe Sony could be they really aren't dropping their prices by as much as I expected.

I expect that end of the year shopping season 2011 we'll have several below $100 readers to choose from.

The article said they are beta-testing the social software and the website.
Obviously its not an open beta so that part of the site is hidden.

Where's that being sold from at that price? I checked the Ectaco website and the lite is still $149.

Carl, the jetBook Lite was $89.99 with free shipping at newegg.com the week before last.

JBL sales are always mentioned in the jetBook forum, so if you keep an eye there, you will see the next time it goes on sale.

Sony won’t sacrifice the quality and design we’re bringing book lovers to lay claim to the cheapest eReader
Love this quote from the article.

It seems like Amazon is able to reduce the price while increasing the quality of the product. Maybe if Sony tried that tactic it would sell some more units.

Their ebook business is there to make money on the hardware as shown by them having launched their hardware without a bookstore everywhere else outside of north america.

If they can't make money on the hardware then they will leave the market or adjust so that they can make money that way, the future for sony in this market will probably end up being a higher end device tied to the b&n site or perhaps they will be one that ends up licensing the kindle hardware and producing a sony-branded version of that. They have tried being a trailblazer in this market, but they simply don't have the same level of desire as other companies where the hardware is secondary to boosting their sales of content like amazon or b&n.

I dunno, I think Sony is probably done. Despite getting into the market first, they just don't have a brand identity that is associated with books, while Amazon and B&N obviously do. They would've been much better off building ebook devices for an existing chain of bookstores at the outset.

Also, I suspect Amazon is at least temporarily suspending its previous strategy (profiting from both device and ebooks) in favor of profiting primarily off the ebooks. I'm pretty sure Sony was planning to make money from the device, in which case the price war is going to seriously hurt them.
