PineNote 10.3" 227dpi e-ink with Wacom announced
Pine64.org has announced a 10.3" 1404x1872 e-ink device with Wacom layer to be available later this year for $399. This will probably be a work in progress for quite some time after initial release, so anyone wanting a polished product ready for prime time doesn't need to read any further. But anyone interested in user freedom might want to keep an eye on progress. (And, of course, the priority of open drivers means the CPU and GPU won't have top tier performance.)

My nephew tried to make a PinePhone work for him — he gave it five or six months and finally gave up on it. So I'm a little jaded about this outfit. But I like the idea PineNote and I hope it works out for folks.

A consumer ready pinenote will take some time, but I have high hopes for both it and the pinephone. A lot of community members are donating quite a bit of good work and pine64.org has been good about incorporating the best of it and even providing free hardware to some. |

I don't see any Pine device ever really working for me. But I'm glad they manage to continue to put stuff out. |

The e-ink display on the PineNote is now supported by the mainline linux kernel.

Still anxiously waiting to see the first device with e-ink's On-Cell screen. I'm guessing it might be Boox who will be first to implement the new screens when they refresh their lineup. Seems like the biggest advancement since the Pearl to Carta transition- 30% contrast improvement.
Still waiting..... |

There has been more progress on the PineNote (but it is still not ready for even enthusiasts yet).

Apparently, the PineNote as delivered comes with a basic non-optimized, but fully functional Android installation, and is already capable enough if just reading is the main intended use for it.
Here is a recent video by one of the developers showing an overview of the preinstalled Android, taken before he finally replaced it with a Linux system for development: www.youtube.com/watch?v=DWuTGgQHw98 Please note the koreader icon on the bottom left side: If koreader can be installed, any reader device becomes worthwhile. Since the current PineNote developer edition can also be freely purchased since quite a while by more adventurous non-developers at pine64.com/product/pinenote-developer-edition, it could turn out to be a much more future proof investment buying one of these instead of just yet another iteration of locked down consumer devices by Boyue, Boox, etc. A pity though, that the PineNote has no SD card slot and there don't seem to be any plans including one with later hardware revisions. There has been no PineNote news posted on the PINE64 blog for months and nothing of note or much at all in the PineNote subforums. There was a disappointing comment in the comments section of this month's post in the PINE64 blog in response to a comment asking about PineNote progress

I really hope this works out in the end. Judging from the PinePhone, though, I don't have high hopes.
I would love to buy a 300 PPI version of this even with slightly buggy software to try it out, especially if it had buttons (page turn, home, settings, whatnot). |

And now on top of everything else, the PineNote is out of stock:
https://pine64.com/product/pinenote-developer-edition/ Yeah, I'm stating to get worried about the PinePhone as well. On top of the slow progress to date, Pine64 has recently pissed off a bunch of developers by giving preferential treatment to Manjaro. |
