Smallcaps font size
I was recently editing an eBook that used some smallcaps. So I decided to find out what the size of the smallcaps is.
Comparing fake smallcaps to real smallcaps in the calibre editor, I've found that 0.8333em is the size of smallcaps. Code:
.smallcaps { font-size: 0.8333em; } |

I've been using font-size: 0.8em; for fake smallcaps.
Close enough. |

Depends on the font and whether it has embedded smallcaps (OTF for the most part) or if you are using an separate font file (most TTF and quite a few OTF). My limited testing showed anything from 0.75em to 0.88em.

Like most font related stuff, there's little consistency.

Lol, thanks. This is just the kind of weird question I think of in the middle of the night when I can't sleep. Interesting.

Even worse when you find yourself looking at the sort of weird question at 3AM.

should it be 3 AM, 3 <smallcaps>AM</smallcaps>, 3 A.M., 3 <smallcaps>A.M.</smallcaps>, 3AM, 3<smallcaps>AM</smallcaps>, 3 A.M., 3<smallcaps>A.M.</smallcaps>, 3a.m., 3am, 3 a.m., or 3 am?
This kept me awake once. The last two are common and I added my decision to the flyleaf of The Penguin Dictionary of Abbreviations, which wasn't much help. |

So am I, but characters may use am and pm in dialogue.
Also people get confused by 12 am and 12 pm (midnight and noon are obvious as is 00:00.) I'm also a fan of YYYY-MM-DD (ISO). No USA vs rest of world is it dd-mm or mm-dd and it text sorts. Also a 2 digit year was always a bad idea, even before Y2K. Why are plastic cards MM/YY? My solution to SMALL CAPS when formatting is to never use them. Nor Drop caps. Maybe it's boring, but I keep fancy for calligraphy where the appearance is as important as the content and it's only one page. Last edited by Quoth; 07-27-2024 at 05:09 PM. |
