Blackwood, Algernon: The Listener and Other Stories. v1. 05 Jan 2022
This was the second collection of Blackwood’s supernatural stories. (The first such collection was The Empty House and Other Ghost Stories in 1906.)
“The Listener” is widely considered to be one of his best ghost stories. A reclusive, impoverished writer is delighted to find an inexpensive home in an old building at the heart of London; but then follow three months of mounting tension, with darkening thoughts and haunted dreams… This collection includes that masterpiece, “The Willows,” in which two men on a canoeing trip on the Danube encounter terrifying elemental spirits. “The Wendigo” has been added as a bonus to this ebook. In the Canadian wilderness, a hunting party separates to track moose, and one member is abducted by the Wendigo, a fearsome beast of legend. Other titles included are: “Max Hensig — Bacteriologist and Murderer;” “The Insanity of Jones;” “The Dance of Death;” “The Old Man of Visions;” “May Day Eve;” “Miss Slumbubble — And Claustrophobia;” and “The Woman’s Ghost Story.” ============ One of the foremost British writers of supernatural tales in the twentieth century, Algernon Blackwood (1869–1951) wrote stories in which the slow accumulation of telling details produced a foreboding atmosphere of almost unendurable tension. Though he wrote a number of horror stories, his most typical work seeks less to frighten than to induce a sense of awe. The literary critic S. T. Joshi stated, “His work is more consistently meritorious than any weird writer’s except Dunsany’s.” Blackwood’s literary renown began in 1908 with the publication of a highly successful collection of stories, John Silence — Physician Extraordinary, featuring a “psychic doctor.” His two best known stories are probably “The Willows” and “The Wendigo”. ============ The Listener and Other Stories, by Algernon Blackwood (1869–1951), was first published in 1907; “The Wendigo” in 1910.
