Edith Nesbit Bland, prolific English author and poet, is best known for her large body of innovative fantasy writings for and about children, such as the Psammead trilogy, "The Enchanted Castle," and "The Railway Children." She also wrote for adults, publishing more than a dozen novels and numerous short stories.

"The Lark," Nesbit’s final novel, tells of two young unmarried women struggling to maintain their financial independence by operating a boarding house. This lighthearted story is said to be inspired by Nesbit’s own attempts to make her large old house pay its own way. Although it is not "realistic" (unlikely coincidences abound), this is an amusing tale, populated with entertaining characters. As Jane frequently informs Lucilla, “This is going to be a lark.”
