Phoenix Pick has announced their free book of the month. It's Tom Paine Maru (Special Author's Edition) by L. Neil Smith (four-time Prometheus Award winner).
Quote:
Tom Paine Maru

Corporal Whitey O’Thraight may need to choose between his own survival and that of his home planet.

Whitey O’Thraight, the Ship’s Armorer on the first interstellar vessel launched by his home planet Vespucci, finds himself stranded on a strange planet with just one other survivor.

Captured by the local Baron, they are freed by a group of monks who are much more than they initially appear to be. Their new benefactors and friends have something special in mind for the two survivors, but going along with these plans might mean the destruction of Vespucci as they knew it.

Another breathtaking adventure by the author of the award-winning Pallas and The Probability Broach.
You can also choose to get it bundled with The Venus Beat and Brightsuit MacBear, also by L. Neil Smith, for just $4.99 on that same page.
Quote:
The Venus Beat

More than 150,000 women have been kidnapped without a trace or any ransom demand in the 'normal' world run by the Federalists and the bureaucracy. But that is not the only problem, because the freedom loving population in the 'alternate' reality of the North American Confederacy are facing their own crises.

People are disappearing across the Probability Broach, including Win Bear's closest friend, Featherstone-Haugh (who heads the Confederacy), and even Win's wife and assistant.

Ill (and deadly) winds are blowing and threatening to destroy the Probability Broach as we know it. Win Bear, keeping one step ahead of lethal assassins and fighting incredible odds, must solve multiple apparently disparate cases that all seem to lead to the end of freedom.
Quote:
Brightsuit MacBear

Berdan Geanar has had a difficult life. Unsure of himself, and apparently hated by the grandfather he has lived with since the death of his parents, he has no idea of what to do with his life.

But when his grandfather abandons him, taking all the family money and a special space suit, Berdan decides to fight and take back what is rightfully his.

Set in the North American Confederacy universe (Probability Broach, Tom Paine Maru), Brightsuit MacBear is a coming-of-age story, an adventure tale, and a rallying cry for defending one's rights against the odds.
And finally, they have a pre-release version of Red Tide by Larry Niven (with Brad R. Torgersen and Matthew J. Harrington) available for just $4.99.
Quote:
Red Tide

Loosely based on Larry Niven s 1973 novella "Flash Crowd," Red Tide continues to examine the social consequences of the impact of having instantaneous teleportation, where humans can instantly travel long distances in milliseconds.

This is a theme that has fascinated the author throughout his career and even appears in his seminal work Ringworld, where the central character celebrates his birthday by instantly teleporting himself to different time zones, extending his birthday. The author also discusses the impact of such instantaneous transportation in his essay, "Exercise in Speculation: The Theory and Practice of Teleportation."

Larry Niven is joined by two younger writers, Brad R. Torgersen and Matthew J. Harrington, as they take on this challenging idea and further develop the theories and concepts that Niven originally presented in "Flash Crowd."

Or you can get Tom Paine Maru, The Venus Belt and Brightsuit MacBear for $4.99. I have all three on paper already.

And it took me a while to format all that info too.

I'm really debating on getting the Red Tide one, I like Niven a lot but some of his recent co-written books haven't been so hot. (Bowl of Heaven for example.) But Googling a bit, I found this info:
Quote:
Red Tide consistes [sic] of four parts, two of which are written by Larry Niven and the other two by Brad R. Torgersen and Matthew J. Harrington.
I may go for it given that. My only concern is if this is an un-copy-edited advance copy or the final version. Arc Manor doesn't make it clear which it is.

Quote:
Jack Holloway works alone, for reasons he doesn’t care to talk about. Hundreds of miles from ZaraCorp’s headquarters on planet, 178 light-years from the corporation’s headquarters on Earth, Jack is content as an independent contractor, prospecting and surveying at his own pace. As for his past, that’s not up for discussion.

Then, in the wake of an accidental cliff collapse, Jack discovers a seam of unimaginably valuable jewels, to which he manages to lay legal claim just as ZaraCorp is cancelling their contract with him for his part in causing the collapse. Briefly in the catbird seat, legally speaking, Jack pressures ZaraCorp into recognizing his claim, and cuts them in as partners to help extract the wealth.

But there’s another wrinkle to ZaraCorp’s relationship with the planet Zarathustra. Their entire legal right to exploit the verdant Earth-like planet, the basis of the wealth they derive from extracting its resources, is based on being able to certify to the authorities on Earth that Zarathustra is home to no sentient species.

Then a small furry biped—trusting, appealing, and ridiculously cute—shows up at Jack’s outback home. Followed by its family. As it dawns on Jack that despite their stature, these are people, he begins to suspect that ZaraCorp’s claim to a planet’s worth of wealth is very flimsy indeed…and that ZaraCorp may stop at nothing to eliminate the “fuzzys” before their existence becomes more widely known.

At the publisher's request, this title is being sold without Digital Rights Management software (DRM) applied.
This is kind of a reboot of H. Beam Piper's book Little Fuzzy which you can find at your favorite public domain source.

The European sites of amazon have English ebooks on sale each month. Related to this thread, for example, amazon.fr has:
- Sabriel by Garth Nix 0.99 euros
- The Forever Song by Julie Kagawa 1.09 €
- several tomes of the Mongoliad 0.99 €
- Magic Study by Maria V. Snyde 1.09 €
And probably others I haven't spotted, there are 458 discounted ebooks.

That's the original 1961 release. Nothing wrong with it, per se, but it was cut down to about 160K words from the original 220K manuscript, which was released 30 years later.

More info here.
