Is it possible to use a local dictionary? like if you have no internet connection.

@Glorfindel If the answer is no, and you use Windows, then you could use a local dictionary that does a lookup on currently selected word(s) in any application - browsers, pdf readers, text editors, word processors, spreadsheets, presentation tools... and ebook viewers.

I use Word Web and The Sage via their built-in and configurable hotkey facility, Ctrl+` and Alt+` respectively . I don't know if commercial dictionaries have a similar facility - but I'd be surprised if they didn't.

I don't know if there are similar programs to WordWeb and The Sage for Mac and Lunix, but I would imagine so.

You can install the old Mobipocket Reader (MR) from archive.org and use it as a popup dictionary with the Calibre ebook viewer.

To look up a word

1. Install MR and add some DRM-free Kindle/Mobipocket dictionaries.
2. Enable Tools > Settings > Lookup > Enable Lookup in all Windows applications in MR.
3. Minimize MR and open a book with Calibre Reader.
4. Highlight a word in the Calibre ebook viewer and press F2 (or whatever default lookup key you defined in MR).

Unfortunately, yes. However, MR requires only about 3MB of RAM and doesn't use the CPU, when it's not in use. Most modern background apps use way more memory and processing power.
