sony pocket reader- borders e- books
Is there a way to buy e books from Borders and use on a sony reader (directly or convert somehow)?

No. Borders does not sell ebooks, so that would be pretty impossible. If you buy your Reader at Borders though, the Sony store will say "The Reader Store at Borders." I think they get a cut (which is good).

But that should not be your only criteria for buying an ereader device. YOu need to expand your options a bit
