Troubleshooting Installing W4PC (windows 7 version) on a Windows 8 PC

I've read you need to install the windows 7 version of Amazon's Kindle For PC free reader to have your ebooks from Amazon stored ON your computer rather than the cloud. True????

I downloaded the win 7 version installer to my machine and started it. It loaded about halfway and then nothing. It just quit.

It did put an icon for Kindle Reader on my desktop but it will not open.

Any clues to getting it to work?

Perhaps try installing again from a new download (in case it didn't download right)? I just installed it on my laptop last weekend and it installed and works fine.

K4PC comes installed on Win 8 PC's. It is an icon on the Win 8 start menu. If you want to use a Win 7 desktop, install the Win 7 Start Icon on your desktop Task Bar and then copy the K4PC icon to your desktop.

I believe it is a Win 8 K4PC version. Mine is Version 1.10.6 (40500).

It's not pre-installed on all machines, mine included.

...and the Win 8 app version doesn't allow access to the downloaded book files which is why many people are installing the regular version. It only comes pre-installed on machines from certain manufacturers, it's not included in the Win 8 base install.

It's not so much that you can't download books to the Win 8 app. It's that any books you download are stored somewhere within the app so you can't just go to Documents/My Kindle Content and have access to the actual book files.

All my eBook files from Amazon were listed in the Archives. I had to download the one's I wanted using K4PC. Even my K4PC collections were already pre-installed in my version without me doing anything.

Dell supplied mine. It is possible other sellers don't pre-install it.

You're entirely missing the point, sirmaru. Many of us use K4PC not to read books on our PCs, but as a way of getting Amazon books into Calibre. We can't do that with the Win8 app; we need to use the Win7 program.

Correct.

My Dell (purchased in late June 2013) came with the Windows 8 App version preinstalled. It works OK, but I quickly installed the full Windows version (aka Windows 7 version) for just this reason. Both versions work well under Windows 8, but there are "features" in the full versions that are missing in the App.

Does Caliber have a Windows 8 version yet?

I just found where the Kindle eBooks are stored in Windows 8. For me its in:

Computer \ Data (D : ) \ My Documents \ My Kindle Content

There four files represent each eBook: AZW, MBP, PHI, APNX. Some have a fifth file: LPR.

With that information you should be able to get Caliber to access those files. I have most programs stored on C :, an SSID, and most data stored on D :, a SATA.

I am using the Window 8 version of K4PC 1.10.6 (40500).

That is NOT the same file structure as Windows 7 but now you know the locations and file structures.

The OP said the Win 7 version of K4PC did not run properly in Win 8.

By the way, all my eBooks had to be re-downloaded into my K4PC for Win 8. The files moved from my Win 7 PC did not allow access with K4PC for Win 8. That is the reason some folks can't get the files to appear in K4PC for Win 8. They MUST be re-downloaded.
