Store 30gig on a Credit Card - Coming in 2006
Engadget is reporting that there is a holographic storage drive coming soon from Optware that will store 30gig on credit card size storage media. And the storage cards will cost less than $1 each. Now that's pretty exciting technology.
Of course the main unit will cost about $2000 when released, but we're heading in the right direction! |

Ahem, the major problem with holographic storage, and probably the primary reason why these are "less than $1.00 each", is heat and cold. You can't possibly ensure the integrity of the data on the card under those fluctuating conditions, and certainly not if the card is in any way flexible.
Maybe its a 250M card with 4 identical copies of the data on the card, to make up for the large chance of data loss due to temperature and flexibility. You can read more about holographic storage and its features and problems, at the IBM research site. |

I am sure most of you guys watched Minority Report. Remember Cruise watching the video of his lost child from some kind of palm-sized holographic plate?
I cannot wait to get the first PDA with holographic storage in my hands |
