I'd like not to reread the one I've read and I can reject one out of hand. I've got no farther than that, although I have a slight preference for nonfiction because we don't usually do that. It's not a deal-breaker, however.

I've read the two books that are in the lead. I got an ARC of Radium Girls back before it was released and enjoyed it. Salt, on the other hand, didn't do much for me.

I finally had a chance to look into things here and vote.
The last audiobook I listened to was The Devil in the White City and was narrated wonderfully by Scott Brick; he is also the narrator of Salt so I look forward to that one either way. About 8 more hours to vote if you haven't yet! And we have a 2 way tie. |

It came down to the finish line and it's Radium Girls by a nose.

I recall watching a documentary about these unfortunate women some years ago. It included interviews with at least one victim who described how they were instructed to paint the radium on watch dial numbers by licking the brush into a tiny point. Of course that caused them to ingest radium. The anguish this ultimately caused was heart-rending.

My library had the audiobook, so I can get a nice review of the book and see what changes were made from the ARC.

Not sure of this publisher, but for most the differences from an ARC to the final version are typos, and basic proof-reading changes. I know I just read an eARC from Baen, and there were a number of those sorts of errors. Generally, ARCs come after editing and before final proof-reading. I wouldn't expect you to see any differences in the audio version. That being said, of course, an audio version of a book is a different experience and I often find I get different results when I listen to a book as compared to reading. (And for this selection, I have both available. Not sure which I'll choose. Possibly a mix.)

Since you've read it already ... is this a book with extensive footnotes or endnotes, and/or with photos that would make the e-book a better choice than the audiobook?

There are 34 photos, but no footnotes as such. There is a substantial "Notes" section at the end, listing where many of the quotes in the text came from, but this shouldn't be an issue, given that there's no additional detail in those notes beyond the source for the quote that's already in the body of the text.

I'm finding it somewhat surprising that there are wait lists for the book at all of my libraries, even though they have multiple copies. I know it's fairly new, but even so, it seems unusual. |

One of my Overdrive libraries has 10 people waiting per copy for the ebook and 20 people per copy for the audiobook. Those people could use their same library card to immediately access available copies of the ebook and audiobook via Hoopla or Axis360. I put in a hold at one of my other libraries since I prefer to read via e-ink rather than tablet, and the wait there is only a few weeks. I suspect most people don't realize the number of options for service that are available from a single library card in some cities.
