Poor Things by Alisdair Gray is $2.99 at Amazon US and Kobo US.

It won the Whitbread Award and the Guardian Fiction Prize in 1992.

Now a major motion picture!, as they say.

A brilliant writer of literary fiction. His masterpiece is Lanark.

Highly recommended for readers who like to be challenged with sophisticated and mature prose. As William Boyd states in the Introduction to Lanark: "...its immense freight of reputation is impossible to ignore."

Still Life with Woodpecker by Tom Robbins is $2 at Amazon, B&N and Kobo US.

Highly recommended. I read it thirty years ago and still think about it. Time for a reread I guess.

Quote:
Still Life with Woodpecker is a sort of a love story that takes place inside a pack of Camel cigarettes. It reveals the purpose of the moon, explains the difference between criminals and outlaws, examines the conflict between social activism and romantic individualism, and paints a portrait of contemporary society that includes powerful Arabs, exiled royalty, and pregnant cheerleaders. It also deals with the problem of redheads.

The Free Friday selection from Barnes & Noble is Landing by Moonlight by Ciji Ware. Looks interesting. WWII historical fiction inspired by true stories.

I would say to be wary of the publisher. I've gotten stuff from them before (because all their stuff is cheap) and haven't been happy with their formatting. May be better to wait for the Penguin version to go on sale.

That's obviously a bootleg edition. Steinbeck's works are not in the public domain; he's got just one publisher and it's not "Original Classics Edition" as sold by "De Marque".

People are gonna do what they're gonna do, but I personally would not pay money to pirates. Get it from the library if you don't want to pay the PRC price.

...and it would be easy enough for Amazon to root out these obvious bootlegs, but they clearly don't want to.

I'm not quite sure who De Marque is, since I've looked them up before, and they didn't seem like pirates:

But I admit that them having the rights to Steinbeck seems odd.

Their about page states that they were started in and are still primarily based in Quebec, Canada, and Steinbeck is in the public domain in Canada.

As to why they are selling the book in the US though? Maybe they didn't think to filter out the books still in copyright in other countries.

Just travel to Canada, China, Hong Kong, Pakistan, New Zealand, or Japan and buy the Delphi Classic edition for $3.99

I'm not an advocate for "traveling"; however, that said, if you're going to travel, why wouldn't someone travel to Faded Page and get it for free? That's no more gray than the paid alternatives. In any case, De Marque is not entitled to make money from selling Steinbeck through a US vendor and I'd never buy from them, even if getting it from Amazon puts a gloss of legitimacy on it.
