I wouldn't mind reading sex scene if they really involve with the storyline. I mean, many NYTimes best sellers out there have it.

So are you advocating that I read 50 Shades of Whatever...'cos I certainly wasn't planning to?

depends on the author, depends on the sex scene. Scenes where it moves the plot or the relationship forward, yes (but not in anatomically-correct detail, please). There just because? I'll probably skip over it.
On the other hand, I like the sex in the In Death books, because even though ti doesn't move the relationship forward any (well, hell, they're married - how much more forward do you want to go?), it usually is for an emotional arc, and the emotional arc is really what those books are about (well, that and the mysteries are pretty good too.) |

Look, people who like to read sex scenes are welcome to enjoy them; I don't. Is there any particular need for everyone to enjoy them? |

I'm not interested in watching other people play sports or have sex. I'm not generally interested in a bunch of love related angst. I'm paying the hero to wreak havoc upon Evil Giant Gerbils from Orion. Let him worry about his relationship problems on his own time. |

Apparently, you and I haven't been watching the same nature documentaries. How does that Bloodhound Gang song go exactly?:
You and me, baby, ain't nothin' but mammals So let's do it like they do on the Discovery Channel (etc., etc., repeat until dead) The song also makes lascivious reference to Siskel and Ebert. Something tells me you'd rather not read about that on a given day, either. |

I went for the: 'Love scenes are fine if they contribute to characterisation and plot' option.
For me it's all about relevance and balance. A good story will draw me into the characters and if a loving relationship is part of the plot then I want it to be part of the story and evoke the character's emotional involvement. There's a huge difference between love and sex of course. A story that consists of endless, highly detailed graphic sex scenes is ultimately going to be boring. |

I just realized I don't read books with very many, if any, sex scenes.
I wouldn't mind though IF the push the plot forward. |

Love scenes in a book can be good (eg "Pride and Prejudice"). Sex scenes in a book are just tedious, to my mind. I might have found them stimulating when I was 14 years old. These days if I want porn, there are better ways to get it.

Don't quite agree with the nature analogy. Reflected in You (which is 90% sex), they "do it" 6 times or more a night, and then get up and go to work the next day. Must be some alternate universe I am not familiar with. But normally, I like them if they contribute to the story line. Unfortunately, I think Reflected in You is just sex, sex, you are keeping secrets, sex, sex. I did find it tedious. I wanted to get to the story! Didn't realize there was none.

"Sex is the kind of thing you don't want to think about while you're doing it or it gets really strange. It's like plumbing or something." Then again, anyone who can make it through a Robbe-Grillet novel probably won't mind. And sometimes the alienation created by scrutiny of sex becomes a statement on its own (J.G. Ballard's Crash). |

I am reading 1Q84 right now and ran into some lesbian sex scene. I only found it interesting due to the fact that the girls were Japanese.

I think it does depend. I read and write erotica and my novel is a dark adult fantasy/fantasy romance with sex init. However the scenes are (I think) justified within the characterisation of the characters and not just for the sake of it. I like historical romance and a bit of a saucy scene if it is well done. But I do appreciate it is not to everyone's taste. I market mine as having romance/erotica in it and the first sex scene is in chapter one and can be seen on the "look inside" on Kindle, I also put a "contains adult scenes" warning.
Fair enough though if that is not for you. I write what I like to read in some part and everyone is different. The sexy scenes in books can overwhelm the story some times and a lot of erotica is your own imagination filling in the details. |
