Thank you.

It seems Kobo also just changed their DRM scheme so that the tools/obok no longer work.

Yes and no. The actual main kfx file seems to be smaller, but the sdr directory associated with the file has additional kfx files for the same book. Altogether this winds up in the same ballpark as the equivalent azw3, at least for the two books I checked. A quick look seems to indicate that images and metadata are split out into separate kfx files.

Hmmm...kfx files actually appear to be smaller.

Odd.

So could this be why the book can't be opened using Calibre? Maybe if Calibre can figure out how to combine the files properly, it would be readable?

No it probably means that .kfx files have a new encryption / compression that is incompatible with current tools to de-drm or unpack. Otherwise why would all the files have the same .kfx extension when they didn't before?

This is the only info Amazon is providing AFAIK...

The software update includes general improvements and the following new features:

A redesigned Smart Lookup makes it easier to get to the actions you want to take while reading - highlight, create a note, share a quote, and more, while keeping your favorite Smart Lookup features like Dictionary, Wikipedia, and X-Ray easily accessible. Just tap and hold on a word, phrase, or sentence to bring up Smart Lookup and swipe right to left to see the next card.

Bookerly, our new, exclusive font specifically designed for reading on digital screens to help customers read faster and with less eyestrain, is now available.

New typography and layout improvements with hyphenation, justification, ligatures, and kerning, as well as pop-up footnotes, endnotes and chapter notes. These improvements are supported in hundreds of thousands of Kindle books today, including many best sellers, with more being added every week, and are currently available for titles in English, French, Italian, German, Spanish, Portuguese, and Dutch.

Goodreads now offers personalized recommendations and author profile pages.

Firmware now includes audio drivers and makes reference to some sort of ASR device. Believe it's a USB audio screen reader you'll plugin via the USB port with a headphone jack. Makes reference to new hardware revisions but couldn't make out much more than that.

Also might just be that they're bringing back audio/aux jack in the next kindle (voyage 2?) and jamming it in all the kindle software baselines. Who knows?!

I love Bookerly but I find the new Smart Lookup rather inconvenient as it requires swiping. I like to have Dictionary, X-Ray, and Wikipedia as tabs.

Has navigating search results improved with 5.6.5 on Voyage, or is swiping still the only way to move from one page of results to the next? (I keep hoping the haptic buttons will work or there'll be a pop-up window to jump to a different page of results the way there is when navigating your library.)

Me neither. This swipe belongs to tablets in my opinion. I don't like it on the Voyage.

I just noticed the new lookup stuff. I don't think this book has xray, at least not on the lookup screen its not. I never really used that so I don't know what it looked before anyway.

But long pressing on a word now it puts things in boxes one swipes through and the other boxes are on the right. I just figured out I didn't have to swipe side ways to get from dictionary to wiki to translation, the buttons work. Still have to swipe down within the box for like wiki if text is more than the few lines.

eta: just figured out the xray, its the first box when long pressing a name. And since I don't have to swipe, but can use the buttons on my voyage, its ok. Wouldn't like it like this on a PW though. Tabs where better there I think.
Nicely designed for the Voyage.

They also changed the popup you get when you finish a book on Amazon. I know many of you side load, but I don't so I still get that. Its where I rate. Now its a full screen popup and the stars for rating are bigger so no more mis hits from me. Its called the "before you go" page. They also now list much nicer the other books in a series and at the end there is an option to sign up to receive emails about this author and their books.

I like it so far.

As far as swiping during search, I just did a search for a common word in a book and I got 10 pages and you still have to swipe, buttons don't work.

If you do a search from the home page instead and click on results in books then you can tab on the page number in the bottom right and go to the page you want, but still buttons don't work. The tapping on the page numbers does not work when searching within a book, only when you search from home page.
Hope that helps.

Yes, I really liked the tabs. Seemed very natural for the display.
