I agree completely with your assessment of Google Play's search capabilities. In fact, I would go even further and say that it is horrible, IMHO. Kind of ironic, isn't it--GP being from the same company that practically invented Internet search?

I wouldn't mind the fact that the book's not a light read, but there are some subjects like the one that this covers that are about things so terrible that it is hard for me to even read about them. And, no, I am not of any of the races that Hitler had systematically murdered.

When I just checked, the book is $37.40 at Amazon in the U.S.

I noticed that you have been a member of Mobileread for about a year, but that the above post was only your fourth. Thanks for posting; despite my personal qualms about the subject matter, the post was a good one for those who those who don't feel the way that I do about reading about it.

I was browsing and found a few HarperCollins science and natural history books on sale for $1.99. I've linked eBooks.com and Amazon, but I expect these to be on sale pretty much everywhere.

I read the story of Joseph Merrick quite a long time ago. However, it couldn't have been from this book, because this one was published, apparently for the first time, less than five years ago.

If you haven't ever read the story of the man, it is a sad one, but also an intensely interesting one. Too, if you're like me, you'll go away, after reading the book, with more appreciation of how things are so much better now than they were in the late 19th century when this man lived.

I do not remember coming across any marked-down ebook biography of Joseph Merrick in the 4 or 5 years that I've hunted for ebook bargains. So, this is a great opportunity to pick up on the cheap what I'm sure is a great read. I rarely know when a markdown on a book will end, but I learned that this one is set to expire Feb. 2.

The True History of the Elephant Man: The Definitive Account of the Tragic and Extraordinary Life of Joseph Carey Merrick. By Michael Howell; Peter Ford. Rated 4 1/2 stars, but from only 7 reviews (oddly) at the present moment. However, it is the "#1 Best Seller in Actor & Entertainer Biographies" at Amazon. Print list price $12.95; digital list price $8.99; Kindle price now $1.99.
http://www.amazon.com/True-History-E...+Carey+Merrick.

I happen to know that this book is also (supposed to be) available for the same price, $1.99, at Barnes & Noble and Kobo, also.

Book Description
Due to horrible physical deformities, he spent much of his life as a fair-ground freak. He was hounded, persecuted, and starving, until his fortune changed and he was rescued, housed, and fed by the distinguished surgeon, Frederick Treves. The subject of several books, a Broadway hit, and a film, Joseph Merrick has become part of popular mythology. Here, in this fully revised edition containing much fresh information, are the true and unromanticized facts of his life.

Sometimes but it may mean just "you are not registered with Amazon.com for ebooks"

With a different ASIN - a different publisher ?

It is available in the Netherlands.

Free from the small press publisher @ iTunes (available to Canadians) & thence price-matched to selected regional Amazon stores (will require a compatible level of app/device):

Draw Chibi Dark: Evil is the New Cute! by Christopher Hart, who's had a whole bunch of those Learn to Draw Manga and How to Draw Comics paperbacks out from arts instruction specialist imprint Watson-Guptill, IIRC. This is his niche instruction book in for Exactly What It Says In The Title, possibly self-published (it seems that Cartoon Crafts LLC only has the one e-book out from him thus far), if you're interested.

Learn to draw the dark side of the cutest characters in manga with Draw Chibi Dark—Evil Is the New Cute! In this ebook, bestselling how-to-draw author Christopher Hart gives step-by-step instructions on drawing two adorably dark chibi characters—a Goth rocker and a Victorian Goth. But don't be fooled by their spooky natures. These are still the unmistakably cute chibis that every manga artist loves.

A whole ten pages, according to reviews... still going to pass, even at that price.

HA!

Right now, you can get Sgt. York: His Life, Legend & Legacy: The Remarkable Untold Story of Sgt. Alvin C. York at Amazon for $2.99.

Sgt. York is famous for his battlefield exploits during the first world war, but he is also notable for refusing to bank on that notoriety in private life.

Ebook on Understanding and Handling Anxiety, Only 99 Cents--Whispersync Only $1.99.

The high rating and glowing reviews leads me to post the following book. I know that it will be of "appeal" only to a small number of people who follow this thread. Perhaps it will be of help to many of them.

One thing that reviewers frequently mention is that the book presents a lot of research results. Like probably all medical problems, there are rapid advances in the understanding and treatment of this one, and information on understanding and treatment of it quickly becomes out-of-date. It may be helpful for you to know that this book was published less than a year and a half ago (November 3, 2013).

The Anxiety Handbook: The 7-Step Plan to Understand, Manage, and Overcome Anxiety. By Calistoga Press. Rated 4 1/2 stars, from 105 reviews at the present moment. Print list price $8.99; regular(?) digital price $3.82; Kindle price now $0.99. Calistoga Press, publisher. 114 pages. http://www.amazon.com/Anxiety-Handbo...ercome+Anxiety.

The Whispersync audio companion to this Kindle ebook is only $1.99.

Happened to stumble onto this book for only $ 2.40 (and it's a huge book):

The Children by David Halberstam

The young men and women at the heart of David Halberstam’s brilliant and poignant The Children came together through Reverend James Lawson’s workshops on nonviolence. Idealistic and determined, they showed unwavering bravery during the sit-ins at the Nashville lunch counters and on the Freedom Rides across the South—all chronicled here with Halberstam’s characteristic clarity and insight. The Children exhibits the incredible strength of generations of black Americans, who sacrificed greatly to improve the world for their children. Following Diane Nash, John Lewis, Gloria Johnson, Bernard Lafayette, Marion Barry, Curtis Murphy, James Bevel, and Rodney Powell, among others, The Children is rooted in Halberstam’s coverage of the civil rights movement for Nashville’s Tennessean.

This ebook features an extended biography of David Halberstam.
