When I was a kid I read a novel about a cursed/evil female doll, the cover was a blueprint design of the doll and from my memory most of the book was about other alive (not cursed) toys dealing with the doll in the kids bedroom/playroom, does anyone have any ideas? I asked ChatGPT but it kept thinking it was Goosebumps when I think the book was standalone

I think the man was an assassin. Not sure. it came out around the time Decision at Doona was published first so sometime after 1969 perhaps
I'll take a long shot here: John Christopher, "The Tripods" [3 or 4 in the series?] - but no hooded man.

There is also https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chucky_(Child%27s_Play), not to be confused with Chocky.

Hi all -

I'm looking for a book my daughter wants to re-read but of course can't remember the name of.

The details she gave me were:

SciFi
Young Adult
Terraforming
They enslaved an alien (or aliens? my daughter didn't specify) to do, or help with, the terraforming
The alien characters name was something like Chrome or Chrone

Anyone have any idea what this book may be named?

Thanks in advance!

Any idea when she might have read it? (I'm really just BUMPing this thread, in case somebody else recognizes it.)

This sounds a bit like The Terraformers (Annalee Newitz), but that was published in 2023 so I'd be a bit surprised it's been forgotten already. When did she read it?

Also check out Children of Time (Adrian Tchaikovsky). I don't think either was specifically marketed as YA; The Terraformers is probably closer to crossover than the Tchaikovsky.

I asked her this on our phone call today. She said "within the last ten years" but that she didn't know when the book was written. She's a much better judge of time than I am, so when she says "within ten years" I'm betting that means she read it "8 to 10 years ago". But of course, the book could have actually been written in the 50's for all we know.

Funny! She just asked me if I have this one because she wants to read it. I guess she heard about it somewhere in her quest to find this mystery book that she has forgotten. Wouldn't that be funny if this was actually the book she is trying to remember! I don't have it but I checked all the local libraries I'm a member of. They all have it (in ebook format at least). So it must be a popular book. I told her to check the libraries in her state.

Total wildcard guess involving hypothesising significant memory-warping (which wouldn't be surprising over ten years): Terry Pratchett's "Strata" has an alien called Silver.

I sent her the Fantastic Fiction webpage on that book. She sad that wasn't the book she was thinking about, but now she wants to read "Strata". So thanks for bringing that one up!
