Time for another batch of books that are sometimes a bit sci-fi, maybe supernatural, often horror, and with a bit of mystery. I suppose there's also a romance angle with one of them as well. Possibly not a book that regular romance readers will want to check out, though!

Basically, Stephen King's 69 today, so the following are all £1.99 at Amazon UK and other retailers. They don't often get reduced, so best to get in quick if you're interested.

The Bazaar of Bad Dreams
IT
The Shining
Misery
The Bachman Books *
Duma Key
The Tommyknockers

* Be aware that the modern-day Bachman Books only has three novels in. Rage was removed some years back at King's insistence after various school shootings.

X-link to the DRM-free thread for the new Humble Bundle:

Humble Book Bundle Forbidden Books supporting Banned Books Week contains mainly graphic novels, but also a few prose books. A title that may be of interest to sfnal readers is multiple Hugo & Nebula Award-winning author Samuel R. Delany's graphic novel autobiography (focusing mainly on his personal life), available at the $1 minimum tier. There's also the 1st volume of Brian K. Vaughan & Fiona Staples' Hugo-nominated space opera comic Saga, but that's previously been offered in other HB.

I've read "Rage" in paperback. I have a copy of the Bachman Books published prior to his removal of the story. I don't know that it inspired any kids to shoot up their high school but I understand Mr. King's reasoning.

Mars Endeavour

Quote:
“NASA prepared us for every eventuality on Mars, but they never prepared us for what could go wrong on Earth.”

Mankind has long dreamed of reaching out to live on other planets, and with the establishment of the Mars Endeavour colony, that dream has become reality. The fledgling colony consists of 120 scientists, astronauts, medical staff, and engineers. Buried deep underground, they’re protected from the harsh radiation that sterilizes the surface of the planet. The colony is prepared for every eventuality except one—what happens when disaster strikes Earth?

I like the sound of that. Slighty reminiscent of the final episode of an otherwise deathly dull sci-fi TV series called Moonbase 3 that was made over here in the UK back in the seventies.

99p at Amazon UK

And I've just noticed that the two big volumes of Ray Bradbury short stories are currently fairly cheap again - highly recommended.

Ray Bradbury Stories Volume 1 - £3.24
Ray Bradbury Stories Volume 2 - £2.49

I looked it up at IMDB. A six episode miniseries (1973). Somewhat the same size as "The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy" (1981). I've never seen Moonbase 3 though I do have HHGTTG on DVD. I wonder did Moonbase 3 have a basis in a book? I agree that Bradbury is fun to read. I have several of his collections of stories in paperback. Alas the Bradbury books aren't available here in Kindle.

No. It was created by the same production team who were working on Doctor Who at the time but was more of a character drama - the psychological effects of living and working on the moon, the general everyday events that such an environment can throw up, and very definitely no aliens.

The final episode involved a hydrogen bomb being detonated on Earth, despite some speculation that it might start a chain reaction and destroy the atmosphere. Needless to say, it doesn't quite go to plan. It's by far the best of the six episodes produced - something actually happens!

It reminds me somewhat of Kim Stanley Robinson's Mars trilogy. A large part of the conflict is caused by things on Earth going from bad to much worse, while things on Mars improve steadily. If you haven't read it, you might be interested. (Not to mention all the explanations of how they terraform Mars are fascinating.)

The premise (of Mars Endeavor) has some similarities to "The Martian" by Andy Weir but is a lot different from the start.

Book two of the award-winning Lens of the World trilogy, this volume finds the dwarf-like Nazhuret as a modest and fastidious lens grinder. Although he could have chosen an exalted and wealthy life as a noble member of the court, he wishes to live in humble and undisturbed poverty with his lady Arlin. But the ordinary life that Nazhuret wants is abruptly shattered when a vicious attack by paid assassins forces him to run. With possible enemies on all sides, the only place to go is the neighboring kingdom of Rezhmia, where Nazhuret has an ancient blood-tie. However, he finds that Rezhmia is no safe haven, for dark clouds are gathering there, intent on destruction of the homeland of Nazhuret’s heart. Evil tidings, treacherous family members, and powerful sorcery threaten to overtake him, but Nazhuret must survive for the sake of those he loves.
