But you missed the point. The point was that sex in and of itself is not in any way shameful, ugly, or embarrassing, and that talking about it openly shouldn't be nearly as big a deal as it is in the US today. There is something wrong in a society where a video game can have child slavery, drug abuse, gratuitous violence, not to mention glorification of that violence, and be rated for a lower age group than a game that has none of those things, but shows a topless kiss between two lovers. |

Yes. If I was forced between the two - much rather my 8 year old witness to topless kissers then any of the rest of that. |

Basically after you, or rather after the main protagonist, beds one of the many willing in-game wenches, you get a card showing her in bed, in the buff, with a sheet draped over the most private areas, most of the time leaving her upper body bare and turned to face you. Aside from one or two romance options (where the game requires you to develop a close relationship before allowing you to hit the sack together) this card collection is entirely optional, but was considered too offensive, and all cards were censored before the game was released in the US. I'm sure everyone who's seen my posts so far in this thread can guess what my reaction was when the above announcement hit the gaming news websites. This culture has some seriously twisted standards. |

I agree there are some odd double standards in this world. If a young teen pulls out a gun and kills someone they are considered to be old enough to know the consequences of their actions and are tried as an adult, but that same teen is considered not to be able to appreciate the consequences of their actions if they have sex. In both cases it's an emotional teenager going through puberty but in one case they are old enough to face the consequences and in the other they aren't (according to the law). It doesn't make logical sense (at least to me) but then human beings aren't really known for their logic. I think that that's reflected in the difference between erotica and porn though too. With erotica there is a sense of reality but with porn anything goes. For example in erotica the couple have sex and go to sleep afterward but in porn they can go on and on all night long and things always turn out well.

I'm one of the few US players of that game who knew about the books before the game came here, but only The Last Wish was available here back then. According to friends in Poland, that's the weakest book in the series. Go figure... I have this urge to replay The Witcher now. Maybe I'll side with the Scoiatel this time... |

you are right - I have the polish originals. ppl in Germany also cried bitter tears a long time (the 1st thing which came out were the 2 short stories collections: wish and sword) when I told them that there's a 5-book saga after that...

If you pre-ordered the collector's edition of the first game they actually included a copy of The Last Wish... but Blood of Elves came out several months before the sequel, and was not included.
I never thought I'd be bitter about not knowing Polish. |

This is why the labels we use to separate erotica and porn are so useless. As I said, the gray areas between one and the other are huge. |

My personal definition on how to tell the two apart, is that sex in erotica tends to be more realistic than in porn, including any fetishes that may be included. That's just me though.

Sex in porn, of course, is generally concentrated down to the physical act itself; but that doesn't automatically make it more realistic, as the participants often display hyper-responses to stimuli. So, to me, neither are more or less "realistic" than the other. |

I was just looking over the Love or Violence? thread, and it occurred to me that the difference between erotica and porn is often compared to the difference between love and violence, pornography generally being considered the more violent act.
It is another viewpoint; though as I've indicated before, pornography (raw, explicit sex) doesn't have to be violent; neither is erotica (romanticized sex) always about love. The definition can go either way... which is another way of saying it doesn't really work. |
