They could, however, announce it. The potential for (further) Osbourne-ing of the current Jetbooks is nil since the cat's already out of the bag. |

Let's look at what we do know about this reader
The trouble with vaporwear is that we are denied accurate, critical information about it. There are some things we can know about this one though, in case it emerges from the ether:
One of the most important things about any book reader is what DRM and format it can render. It's probably fair to assume that Ectaco will use similar firmware to the JBL--not guaranteed, of course, but it gives us something we can speculate about with real experience. I don't have a Jetbook but the reports I've seen suggest that the JBL is having trouble rendering secure eReader books. Is this true? Certainly the advantage of a book reader that supports eReader formated books includes supporting existing libraries, some of them rather large. I've seen the new eReader app on the iPad and the formatting is better than on handheld devices. There has been some criticism of the eReader format in the past but the example of the iPad app shows there is nothing inherently wrong with that format as long as the Ectaco firmware works. Next question: can we get a good enough selection of books in eReader format? . Can someone who has experience with the JBL firmware fill in here? Also, how reliable is Barnes and Noble as a source of eReader formated books? Does anyone want to venture a guess about the chances Fictionwise, eReader.com, etc., will survive? I'm attracted to the possibility of this Pocketbook 360-like interface though, because I do have a good sized eReader library that I'd like to be able to use and the interface is a significant advance. |

There is no major problem with the JBL rendering of secure eReader books, that I have
noticed. There was some mention of a minor problem for some iteration of the firmware as far as having to re-enter the unlocking data for each book but that was corrected. Ectaco could implement a good eReader DRM enabled "mini" if they wanted to go that route. I fear that the trend is all toward ADE. There is a large base of Palm Doc (pdb) books, for sure, but any sensible owner of such a library would have removed any DRM, I know I have, for mine. Luck; Ken |

I hope jetBook mini will support eReader format. I have more than 50 books in PDB format and I didn't read all of them yet.

On this picture dated on Nov 9th, 2009 they show the tag with name jetBook mini instead of jetBook-Lite and write: ... Verdict: If price is your limiting factor than you can’t beat the JetBook Mini. The idea of a monochromatic, reflective LCD screen seems like a good idea (and is certainly better than an emmitive full-color LCD on the eyes) but we haven’t been able to compare it side-by-side to a traditional E-Ink screen. The battery concept poses advantages and disadvantages but the way ECTACO worked in the housing as a natural handhold is impressive. ... It looks like typo... or these guys predicted the future? |

Nate-the-great's Digital reader site has a link to some pics:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/ssross99/ Hint: There is a very good reason it's called the Jetbook *mini*. Now *that* is how you design a reader. |
