One highlight: The first seven Lovejoy novels by Jonathan Gash are available at £0.84 each. I had the first four from a previous sale, but I'm delighted to add the next three.

Don't know if anyone's noticed that Dana Stabenow's Fire and Ice (Liam Campbell No 1) is free on both Amazon Aus and Kobo Aus.

(And I suggest that this may also be the case in your country)

The Long Midnight of Barney Thomson
Douglas Lindsay
Quote:
Barney Thomson — awkward, diffident, Glasgow barber — lives a life of desperate mediocrity. Shunned at work and at home, unable to break out of a twenty-year rut, each dull day blends seamlessly into the next.

However, there is no life so tedious that it cannot be spiced up by inadvertent murder, a deranged psychopath, and a freezer full of neatly packaged meat.

Barney Thomson's uninteresting life is about to go from 0 to 60 in five seconds, as he enters the grotesque and comically absurd world of the serial killer…

Praise for Douglas Lindsay:

"The plot, Russian literature fans, is a modern spin on Dostoyevsky’s Crime and Punishment. The bloody ending, movie buffs, is pure Reservoir Dogs." – The Mirror

"This is pitch-black comedy spun from the finest writing. Fantastic plot, unforgettable scenes and plenty of twisted belly laughs." – New Woman

"This chilling black comedy unfolds at dizzying speed...an impressive debut novel." – Sunday Mirror

"Gleefully macabre, hugely enjoyable black burlesque." – The Scotsman

THE BARNEY THOMSON novels in order:

#1 THE LONG MIDNIGHT OF BARNEY THOMSON
#2 THE BARBER SURGEON'S HAIRSHIRT
#3 MURDERERS ANONYMOUS
#4 THE RESURRECTION OF BARNEY THOMSON
#5 THE LAST FISH SUPPER
#6 THE HAUNTING OF BARNEY THOMSON
#7 THE FINAL CUT

These seven novels can be bought together as a set. Search for THE BARBERSHOP SEVEN.

Never heard of this one, but it looks interesting! Thanks!

Also free at Barnes & Noble

It looks like B&N has most, if not all, of the series pretty inexpensively. But the best deal may be the seven book omnibus <HERE>, for $9.99. They say "7 novels" which would seem to indicate the full series, but they don't specifically identify the novels. If I like the freebie I'll pick up the omnibus and post an update.

Free Today on Amazon UK - Saturday's Child: A Cal Innes Novel by Ray Banks

'The first novel in Ray Banks's highly acclaimed Cal Innes series. Cal Innes is fresh out of Strangeways, playing PI and running from a past muddied with ties to local ganglord Uncle Morris Tiernan. When Tiernan tells him to track down a rogue casino dealer who's absconded with a hefty chunk of cash, Innes is thrust into a cat-and-mouse game with Tiernan's psychotic son. Finding the thief proves potentially fatal as the case points north to Newcastle and the sordid truth threatens to put blood on his hands. With Tiernan's son on his tail, and a Manchester cop determined to put Innes back on the spurs, Saturday's child definitely has to work hard to keep living.'

I hate it when a book I paid for goes free before I've had a chance to read it.

(I picked Cal Innes for I in my alphabet challenge. I seem to recall it wasn't very expensive to begin with.)

I would say that stove-top kettles are extremely rare in the UK. Everyone has an electric kettle. At least one. I believe the main reason for this is the different mains power. 240v and a three-pin plug with an earth. It's also the case that coffee doesn't need water to be as hot as tea, but I'm not sure how relevant that is.

No guesswork needed. That's exactly what it means. Many kettles are made out of plastic (with a metal heating element, of course).

The Long Midnight of Barney Thomson is excellent black comedy. I bought the omnibus last year and thoroughly enjoyed it . It's a great deal as a freebie.
