Free on Amazon UK - The Fox in the Forest by J M Gregson
'When the town vicar Peter Barton is found shot in the woods between two peaceful villages on Christmas Eve, Superintendent Lambert and his CID team are called in to investigate. His estranged wife herself was missing in the days before her husband’s death, busy with her lover. Could she be the killer Lambert is looking for? Or could it be the only man who seems to dislike the victim and owns a matching shotgun? Or the sweet local boy who travels through the woods every day? Then a second victim is found, again in the woods, again with a shotgun: a man they had held for thirty six hours before. It seems that they have a serial killer on their hands, selecting victims at random, a killer who the papers are calling the ‘Fox’. With an endless list of potential suspects and no real evidence, Lambert struggles to find his culprit. The rural community closes in upon itself with secrets when another girl is attacked by the Fox and everyone seems to know the details of the two killings. Can Lambert and his team find a killer amongst the various townspeople with connections to the murders? More importantly, can they piece together the few clues they have to find the truth before another victim is found? Free on Amazon UK - Signs of Murder (Anna Southwood Mysteries) by Jean Bedford
'Fiona Galloway is a young, deaf social worker - self-assured, confident and successful. But after a series of threatening letters are delivered to her door, her composure is shaken. Fearing for her safety, she turns to private eye Anna Southwood for help. Anna accepts the case with little to go on. But the clock is ticking on, and things take a sinister turn for the worse when Fiona is found brutally attacked and beaten half to death. Fiona tells Anna that she thinks the threats may be linked to her client, Jackie Sims, who is in Long Bay gaol on a murder charge. With the two cases seemingly related but with no hard evidence, Anna struggles to piece together the stories and trace them back to perpetrators. Who is so concerned about what Fiona knows that they would attempt to silence her in such a sadistic manner? Anna soon realises that there is more behind this case that initially meets the eye. With the body count increasing, she begins a race against the clock to untangle the web of intrigue - a world of crooked lawyers, shady doctors, members of Sydney’s criminal underworld, and layers of secrets and corruption ... Per an email from Open Road Media an old mystery by Dorothy Salisbury Davis -- Death of an Old Sinner -- is 1.99 today everywhere (originally 9.99).
Just in case, I thought I'd try to use the JAN1650 code at Kobo even though I think it was supposed to expire at the end Of January. It worked fine; this was about 11:30 am, EST. It's probably too much to hope for but I sure wish the code would stay in effect until all the first-Tuesday-of-the-month books are released. Kobo usually has them available at about 11 pm EST. |

Free on Amazon UK - The Goldfish Bowl by Laurence Gough
'In the West End, a sniper sets up for his next target. Armed with his Winchester 460 Magnum rifle and Redfield variable-power scope, he prepares for his next victim. Alice Palm, a woman who enjoys to party every Friday falls prey to the sniper. The next, a Greek widow on her way from work … A gay taxi driver… Jack Willows and his new partner, Claire Parker, are assigned the task of bringing the sniper in. The killings have clearly been planned, the targets carefully chosen. Willows and Parker strive to overcome their initial awkwardness in their mission to bring this killer down. When Franklin and Atkinson are assigned to search Phasia Palinkas’ apartment, the Greek widow, they inadvertently stumble across the sniper. What was he doing in her apartment? Disturbed, the sniper takes his next victim: Atkinson. At the death of one of their own, the investigation takes on a whole new angle. Franklin, noticeably shaken from the ordeal, is unable to provide a clear recollection of the events leading up to the death of Atkinson. As the investigation deepens, Willows and Parker realise there is more to the killings – how does the sniper know exactly when to strike? If the killer is always one step ahead will the crime ever be solved?' Free on Amazon UK - A Healthy Way to Die by Michael Kenyon
'At the sumptuous SimpSon’s SuperSpa thousands of pounds change hands while the rich and corpulent clientele battle to fight the flab. But pounds that are not of the financial variety are harder to lose, as wheezy members of Millicent Wildwood’s aerobics class soon find out. So when one hapless participant suddenly drops dead during a particularly arduous stretch and firm exercise no one, at first, suspects murder. Enter Constable Jason Twitty, ex-Harrovian SuperSleuth, sartorially striking in embroidered bolero and cowboy boots, whose visit is supposed to be purely routine. But when he has a nasty experience in the jacuzzi, and is warned off the investigation by an unseen attacker, his sleuthing instincts are naturally aroused … It very soon becomes apparent that some of the SuperSpa’s inhabitants are interested in much more than the pursuit of the body beautiful. Harry Bingham was pretty vocal last year about issues with his US publisher and self-pubbing the follow-on books in his series. Looks like he got the rights to his earlier books (two, I think) back and re-issued those also.

Didn't see this posted here, but Kobo (US, not sure on other countries) is having a cozy mystery sale (all under $3). Today is the last day according to the front page.
Many are couponable, though not all. https://store.kobobooks.com/List/coz...js_SUwjTHFewGg Spotchecked and some look like they are on sale everywhere, others don't. |

Amazon UK Daily Deal has all of Stephen Leather's "Spider Shepherd" series on sale for £0.99 each, today only, of course.
I know nothing about this series, but they're from Hodder & Stoughton, so presumably they're OK. |
