^ lol...tell me about it brotha. I literally have 2 stacks of books, hardback and others on my TBR queue. Both stacks are at least 4 feet high.
I am quite sure I am not the only one around here with these kinds of precarious towers. |

Lee Child is the favorite author of one of my good British friends. His other favorite books are by Andy McNab, which are harder to find in the US due to geographical restrictions. He also told me that they are "boy's books". Well, I'm not your typical girl so I had to try them after a comment like that! Jack Reacher does take a very hands-on approach; however, I've read several now and enjoyed them. I've probably gotten 3 or 4 through various free ebook promotions. Paramount is supposed to make One Shot into a movie eventually. Some speculate that Lee Child might be a ghostwriter for the Ludlum non-Bourne books. I've read those books too, and I suppose there are some similarities but who really knows.
I would also recommend the Alex Berenson and Vince Flynn series, which are two of my favorites. Brad Thor is on my TBR list when I can find time to try something new. Last edited by Bookworm_Girl; 06-12-2011 at 02:01 PM. Reason: Fixed spelling |

i read "61 hours" and thought it kind of OK, then started "one shot" and bailed about halfway through.
the reacher character is just too over the top for me, kind of like superman sans cape. i think stephen hunter does a much better job in some of his books with the bob lee swagger character, who gets the bad guys but without the use of superpowers. |

I felt "61 Hours" was sort of a low point in the series and "Worth Dying For" was only slightly better.
Not a big spoiler but - Reacher is "Mr. prepared." His mental alertness, quick thinking, and foresight are some of his greatest strengths. The thought that he'd travel through the midwest in winter without proper clothing is unacceptable. And the ending, with the short drug lord... seriously? "Worth Dying For" made my head hurt in at least two places. How badly hurt does Reacher have to be before he won't charge off in the night to protect a lady's honor? Dead, I guess. And then there was a Keystone Cops sequence in the middle (driving to and from the hotel) where coincidences and timing were stacked too high. Some I'll accept. That many, presented as a sequence, made my eyes glaze until it was over. |

Yes, one can criticize (and I sometimes do ), but Reacher is like the coffee he's always drinking: by the next day you want more.
Thank you to everyone who's made a suggestion -- I don't ever want to come to the end of my "To Be Read" list, and it has just grown longer! |

Stephen Hunter is one of my fave thriller writers. Period. I have been with Hunter since he first broke out with, not with Point of Impact, but with Day Before Midnight from the late 80s as I recall. Brilliant IMO. The Swagger series/character is so memorable. Pity, the Marky Mark movie Sniper was just "meh". FWIW, I highly recommend Hunter for all fans of quality thriller writing. -les |

"point of impact" by hunter is my all time favorite book. i re-read it every few years or so.
realizing that any author can have a few duds, i have "killing floor" on my library wait list. hopefully i like it better than "61 hours" and "one shot." |

^ Indeed, tm3! I have read PoI a number of times over the years. The opening Bob Lee hunting sequence is forever engrained in my memory - it is classic IMO.
More OT, but what did you think of the Marky Mark movie Sniper, which was loosely based on PoI? |

lestatar i was disappointed with the movie, but had low expectations to start as there is no way that a movie could have gotten in all of the subplots and twists of the book.
my biggest disappointment however was that the movie left out the coup de grace twist of the book, which is imo an all time classic courtroom scenario. i also thought that marky mark was a very poor choice for the swagger character. i badgered my wife into reading "point of impact" -- she resisted for a long time, saying she had no interest in a "guy book all about guns and shooting." she ended up loving it, and lent it to several of her girl friends who loved it, also. |

^ Indeed. Pretty much exactly how I felt. I was frankly horrified that Marky Mark was cast as Bob Lee - no offense to him but Bob Lee he ain't. The film was a huge fail for me as an "adaptation" of PoI, but as a standalone film was not complete trash.
Since this thread kinda went waaaaay OT [not my fault, I swear!], here is another guy who I think many of you will love: Victor O'Reilly He wrote a trilogy around a fantastic character named Hugo Fitzduane. I highly recommend the Hangman trilogy and the first one, Games of the Hangman remains one of my all-time fave thriller/military books. |
