A gangster’s journal and a property dispute spell trouble for a Louisiana deputy in this hard-boiled murder mystery by a New York Times–bestselling author.

The Fontenot family has lived as sharecroppers on Bertrand land for as long as anyone can remember. So why are they now being forced from their homes? And what does the murder of Della Landry—the girlfriend of New Orleans fixer Sonny Boy Marsallus—have to do with it?

Marsallus’s secrets seem tied to those of the Fontenots. But can Detective Dave Robicheaux make sense of it all before more bodies drop? In James Lee Burke’s intense and powerful crime novel, Robicheaux digs deep into the bad blood and dirty secrets of Louisiana’s past—while confronting a ragtag alliance of local mobsters and a hired assassin . . .

In the suspenseful series that continues to be both a critical and popular success, Burning Angel will keep you glued to the pages until the ***breathtaking finale.

Dixie City Jam is the seventh Dave Robicheaux book by James Lee Burke. It's $2.99 at Kindle US right now.

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00HOFG31O

Spoiler:
Quote:
A sunken Nazi U-boat drags a Louisiana deputy into lethal danger in this hard-boiled mystery by a New York Times–bestselling author.

It’s out there, under the salt of the Gulf of Mexico, off the Louisiana coast—a buried Nazi submarine. Detective Dave Robicheaux of the New Iberia Sheriff’s office has known of its existence since childhood, when he was terrified by nightmares of the evil Nazi sailors just offshore. Then, as a teenager he stumbled upon the sunken sub while scuba diving—but for years he kept the secret of its watery grave.

But decades later, a powerful Jewish activist wants the sub raised, and Robicheaux’s knowledge puts him at the center of a terrifying struggle of conflicting desires. A neo-Nazi psychopath named Will Buchalter, who insists that the Holocaust was a hoax, wants to find the submarine first—and he’ll stop at nothing to get Robicheaux to talk . . .

With colorful characters, flawless plotting, and devilishly clever dialogue, Dixie City Jam is a spine-tingling suspense novel you won’t want to miss!

The Mill House Murders by Yukito Ayatsuji is £1 in the UK (Kobo, Amazon)
Quote:
Every year, a small group of acquaintances pay a visit to the remote, castle-like Mill House, home to the reclusive Fujinuma Kiichi, son of a famous artist, who has lived his life behind a rubber mask ever since a disfiguring car accident. This year, however, the visit is disrupted by an impossible disappearance, the theft of a painting and a series of baffling murders.

The brilliant Kiyoshi Shimada arrives to investigate. But will he uncover the truth, and will you be able to solve the mystery of the Mill House Murders before he does?

A World of Curiosities: (Chief Inspector Gamache Novel Book 18) - $2.99 at Amazon US

Spoiler:
It’s spring and Three Pines is reemerging after the harsh winter. But not everything buried should come alive again. Not everything lying dormant should reemerge.

But something has.

As the villagers prepare for a special celebration, Armand Gamache and Jean-Guy Beauvoir find themselves increasingly worried. A young man and woman have reappeared in the Sûreté du Québec investigators’ lives after many years. The two were young children when their troubled mother was murdered, leaving them damaged, shattered. Now they’ve arrived in the village of Three Pines.

But to what end?

Gamache and Beauvoir’s memories of that tragic case, the one that first brought them together, come rushing back. Did their mother’s murder hurt them beyond repair? Have those terrible wounds, buried for decades, festered and are now about to erupt?

As Chief Inspector Gamache works to uncover answers, his alarm grows when a letter written by a long dead stone mason is discovered. In it the man describes his terror when bricking up an attic room somewhere in the village. Every word of the 160-year-old letter is filled with dread. When the room is found, the villagers decide to open it up.

As the bricks are removed, Gamache, Beauvoir and the villagers discover a world of curiosities. But the head of homicide soon realizes there’s more in that room than meets the eye. There are puzzles within puzzles, and hidden messages warning of mayhem and revenge.

In unsealing that room, an old enemy is released into their world. Into their lives. And into the very heart of Armand Gamache’s home.

Spoiler:

1978, West Country of England

Under cover of darkness, poacher Dan Mallett trawls Cobb Wood, hoping to snare gamekeeper Edgar Bland’s prized pheasants.

To his horror, he finds Bland lying in wait with a shotgun.

But it seems they are not alone in the woods. Before Bland can fire, an arrow lands in his neck, shot by a stranger in the shadows.

Trapped in Cobb Wood with Bland’s corpse, Dan becomes the prime murder suspect.

On the run from the police and desperate to keep his freedom, Dan vows to find the true killer and prove his innocence…

Who else was lurking in Cobb Wood? Why was Edgar Bland a target?

And can Dan outrun the police long enough to uncover the truth…?

Snare in the Dark is the third cosy village mystery in the Dan Mallett Investigation series: private investigation murder mysteries set in rural England.

You can see my opinion of this series in this previous post, and no, I haven't gotten around to re-reading the first one yet : https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh....php?p=4382379

A while back, I had a review copy of The Lady with the Gun Asks the Questions, which is a collection of Phryne Fisher short stories by Kerry Greenwood. And, although I'm usually not a huge fan of mystery short stories, since I often feel that there just isn’t time to develop much of an investigation, I really enjoyed these. Phryne and Melbourne are as much the stars as the stories themselves, even in the shorter ones, and a couple of the longer ones are really treats. Kerry Greenwood’s note at the beginning of this collection of short stories, letting readers in on how she “discovered” The Honourable Phryne Fisher was an unexpectedly fun bonus. And finally, FWIW, the title has also gone on my list of favorite mystery titles - favorites just for the titles, irrespective of how good/bad the books are.

And, The Lady with the Gun is now on sale in the US...

Kindle US, $2.51: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09CLNG4W5
Kobo US ($2.99, discountable): https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/the...he-questions-1

Spoiler:
Quote:
In The Lady with Gun Asks the Questions, Kerry Greenwood distills the Phryne of her books and imagination. For those fans looking for greater character depth, a richer historical context of the twenties, and Phryne as her truest, freest self, Greenwood has curated just the right stories from her 21 novels and added four brand-new ones so we may meet the real fabulous Miss Fisher.

This Ultimate Miss Fisher Story Collection features four previously unpublished stories:

The Boxer
A Matter of Style
The Chocolate Factory
The Bells of St. Paul's

A decade or so ago, Jane Finnis wrote a short, rather obscure, four-book series set in northern Roman Britain, that I quite liked, featuring innkeeper Aurelia Marcella. The second in the series is now on sale in the US.

A Bitter Chill, $2.99
Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07VQKZN3T
Kobo US (discountable): https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/a-bitter-chill-6

Spoiler:
Quote:
In late December 95 AD, Roman settlers in Britannia are preparing to celebrate Saturnalia. Innkeeper Aurelia Marcella's plans for a peaceful holiday are shattered when her brother brings bad news. An enemy in Rome is trying to destroy her family by spreading rumors that they are plotting against Caesar. Her brother has lost his job as a government investigator, the mansio is menaced by a gang of native criminals, and when a party of rich, demanding travelers arrive to stay, their quarrels and violence spill over into Aurelia's household. Then the Saturnalia banquet, highlight of the festival, culminates in tragic death. The second installment in the Aurelia Marcella series.

Murder in Abbot's Folly is free right now at Kindle US and UK. It seems to not be available at Kobo right now, probably because it's now a Joffe/Lume book, and thus in KU, which I think means it has to be exclusive to Amazon...

And the links have changed also...

Kindle UK: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B087N19L69
