Joffe's Free Friday mystery, which I'm actually posting on Friday for once , is The Missing Checkout Girl, which is the first in the Supermarket Mysteries series by Rachel Ward.

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0BG5ZYBM9
Kindle UK: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0BG5ZYBM9

Spoiler:
Quote:
DISCOVER YOUR NEW FAVOURITE AMATEUR SLEUTH SERIES, A QUIRKY MURDER MYSTERY SET IN A SLEEPY SOMERSET TOWN.

Please note this book was previously published as The Cost of Living.

The little town of Kingsleigh is a place where nothing ever happens. Until . . . a young woman is attacked in an alley on her way home from the supermarket.

The headlines shriek ‘Kingsleigh Stalker!’ The locals just keep calm and carry on.

But then one of the women on the till at Costsave doesn’t turn up for work.

Checkout girl Bea Jordan is determined to find out what happened to her friend. The police don’t seem to be doing anything, so it’s up to her to get to the bottom of things.

And the only person who will help is Ant Thompson, the new guy. But he’s so useless he can’t even mop up a broken bottle of sauce . . .

Meet the workers of Kingsleigh Costsave. There’s Bea, a maths whizz with a heart of gold. Ant, a hapless high-school drop-out. And wisecracking Dot, in her late fifties and always beautifully coiffed.

A CHARMING COZY MYSTERY FULL OF TWISTS AND TURNS AND LOVEABLE CHARACTERS.

There are also a romance and an other fiction-ish war novel for free, posted in their respective threads...

I haven't read either of the two e-books in Arjun Raj Gaind's Maharaja Mysteries series, but I tend to like historical mysteries published by Poisoned Pen Press, and now both books are $1.99 at Kindle US, and the first one is also on sale at Kobo US, where it's discountable.

A Very Pukka Murder, #1
Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07VQM4CCQ
Kobo US: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/a-very-pukka-murder-4

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07VQP5G6V
Kobo US (for price-check): https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/death-at-the-durbar-4

Per SYKM, there is also a third book in the series, The Missing Memsahib, but it doesn't seem to be available in e-book at the moment....

In addition to being a sucker for mysteries set in France, I'm just as much a sucker for mysteries set in Egypt - either ancient or modern-day. And Carol Thurston's The Eye Of Horus fits the bill - as you might guess from its title ...

I read this in DTB many many years ago, and although I'm not usually a fan of the "then-and-now/parallel timeline" approach, Thurston made it work. I don't remember a lot of details, but do remember that I really liked it, and even shed a tear or two while reading. And I was sad that Thurston never wrote any more. So, now that it's on sale at Kindle US for $1.99, I'll probably grab it and put it near the top of my TBR (or TB Re-Read) list.

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0049B22SE

Spoiler:
Quote:
Hired by the Egyptology department of a Denver museum to create displays for an exhibit, medical illustrator Kate McKinnon encounters an intriguing enigma: the mummy of a young woman who lived thirty-three centuries ago, her ribs broken, one hand shattered, and a man's skull between her legs.

With the aid of radiologist Max Cavanaugh, employing the latest forensic and medical imaging techniques, Kate starts to unravel the millennia-old puzzle. And as the mummy's remarkable secrets come to light, a parallel story begins to unfold of a young girl born into a nest of vipers in an age when godlike pharaohs reigned in unimaginable splendor. Suddenly Kate finds herself on a twisting path leading her deeper into the shadows of anciet Kemet...and ever closer to the shocking revelations of a crime so staggering its horrific power remains undimished by the relentless passage of time.

The Music of What Happens is the third in John Straley's Cecil Younger series. A few of the books in this older series won/were nominated for Shamus awards. It's $1.99 right now in the US, and even less (see below) in the UK.

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B075WB1C6L
Kobo US: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/the...f-what-happens
Kindle UK, £0.80: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B075WB1C6L
Kobo UK, £0.99/discountable to £0.68: https://www.kobo.com/gb/en/ebook/the...f-what-happens

Spoiler:
Quote:
Sitka P.I. Cecil Younger is fresh out of rehab with a head wound, a child custody case from hell, and the clients to match . . .

Confrontational and obsessed, Priscilla DeAngelo is sure her ex is conspiring with a state senator to wrest her son from her, and thus, she hires Cecil Younger to investigate. This is the first time Younger has to deal with lawyers in flashy suits and overused paper shredders. When she storms off to Juneau for a showdown, Younger’s custody case swiftly turns into a murder. Younger is fired from the defense team, but he can't stop thinking about the case, and keeps on with the investigation alone. He's not sure what keeps him involved. Is it Priscilla’s sister (his lost love)? His regard for truth as a rare commodity? Or the head injury Priscilla's ex gave him?

But there’s one thing he knows: he won't let go until it’s solved, even if it kills him.

A while back, I had an ARC of Birder, She Wrote, which is the 33rd Meg Langslow book by Donna Andrews, and really liked it - as I've liked all of the Langslow books that I've read. I keep thinking Andrews will finally go totally over-the-top with the Langslow books, and she skates really really close to the line a lot, but somehow (IMO, at least) doesn't quite go over it. They're just plain laugh-out-loud funny, and I can't read them around anyone else. Now Birder is on sale in the US for $2.99.

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0B9KXK3JK
Kobo US: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/birder-she-wrote

Spoiler:
Quote:
Meg is relaxing in the hammock, taste-testing Michael’s latest batch of Arnold Palmers and watching the hummingbirds at their feeders when her hopes for a relaxing early summer morning are dashed.

First her father recruits her to help him install a new batch of bees in the hive in her backyard. Then Mayor Shiffley recruits her to placate the NIMBYs (Not in my backyard), as she calls them – a group of newcomers to Caerphilly who have built McMansions next door to working farms and then do their best to make life miserable for the farmers. And finally Meg’s grandmother, shows up, trailed by a nosy reporter who is writing a feature on her for a genteel Southern ladies’ magazine.

Cordelia drafts Meg to accompany her and Deacon Washington of the New Life Baptist Church – and the reporter, alas – in their search for a long-lost African-American cemetery. Unfortunately what they discover is not an ancient cemetery but a fresh corpse. Can Meg protect her grandmother – and Caerphilly – from the reporter who seems to see the worst in everything . . . and help crack the case before the killer finds another victim?

Fool Me Twice is the second in Michael Brandman’s continuation of Robert B Parker’s Jesse Stone series. It’s $1.99 in the US right now

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B007T94QSC
Kobo US: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/rob...ool-me-twice-1

Spoiler:
Quote:
When two cases collide, police chief Jesse Stone is caught in the middle in this New York Times bestseller.

Autumn in Paradise, Massachusetts, is usually idyllic. Not this time. A Hollywood movie company has come to town and brought troubled star Marisol Hinton—beautiful, talented, demanding, and scared out of her wits that her estranged husband's jealousy might take a violent turn. When she receives a death threat, Jesse and the Paradise police department go on high alert. But more lives are in danger than Jesse imagines—including his own.

Murder in Transit is the twenty-second and most recent (2024) in Edward Marston's Railway Detective series. It's $1.99 right now at Kindle US, but not on sale, at least so far, at Kobo US.

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CG6SJXX8
Kobo US (for price-check): https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/murder-in-transit

Spoiler:
Quote:
1866. On a train bound for Portsmouth, an elegant woman shares a first-class compartment with a gentleman in a celebratory mood. Giles Blanchard reveals his lecherous side as the journey gets underway, but he will never reach his home on the Isle of Wight alive. This chance encounter is to prove fortuitous for the woman and her partner-in-crime. They find themselves not only the richer for picking the dead man's pocket, they also now possess the material for an extremely lucrative blackmail.

Detective Inspector Colbeck and Sergeant Leeming are swiftly dispatched to sift through the evidence. They are all too aware that with Her Majesty Queen Victoria spending the summer on the island, a speedy resolution to the case is a priority for their superiors. Tracing the pair who lured Blanchard to his death is an endeavour freighted with difficulties, but will the fact that their inquiries lead them to the door of a royal residence be one complication too many?
