Twelve Years a Slave: Plus Five American Slave Narratives, Including Life of Frederick Douglass, Uncle Tom's Cabin, Life of Josiah Henson, Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl, Up From Slavery by Solomon Northup, Josiah Henson, Harriet Beecher Stowe, Frederick Douglass, Harriet Jacobs, and Booker T. Washington. Compiled by: Timeless Reads Quote:
I know some (possibly all) of these are offered for free here in the Patricia Clark Memorial Library here on mobileread, but I figured some people might like an omnibus. I grabbed their Anne of Green Gables collection when it was offered for free and from what I have seen, they seem to be very well formatted. I have seen from reviews of their editions that they do correct errors if/when they are pointed out. |

Free Smoking & Curing Kindle Book
I keep running across ebooks today that look good that I want to share . . . .
Old Oak Smokehouse Definitive Guide to Home Smoking & Curing. By Stephen Pape. Not rated at the present moment. Digital list price $9.65. Kindle price $0.00. http://www.amazon.com/Smokehouse-Def...ing+%26+Curing. Note: the author is from the U.K. and the book was first published there so the book's recipes and other information come from that standpoint. The Old Oak Smokehouse Definitive Guide to Food Smoking and Curing demystifies the hidden arts of food smoking, dehydration and curing. This book will suit beginner and professional alike. This beautifully illustrated book covers all bases and offers a great starting point. What seems like a mystery now becomes accessible. There is an extraordinary breadth of recipes suitable for all occasions, none of which require expensive equipment or prior experience, and the background to all the methods is explained in fascinating detail. This book can also be viewed as a reference source for both amateur and professional chefs who want to understand the smoking processes in greater depth, and to develop or further their own skills in this fascinating area of cookery. There is also a suggested beers, wines and cheese pairings that accompany the recipes in this book. An excellent glossary and very useful conversion tables. Many notes and antidotes are included to help the reader expand on the recipe and his knowledge. All in all, an absorbing and informative book and a valuable addition to the cookery collection of anyone with a serious interest in the more esoteric areas of food preparation. |

After flipping through The World's Best Street Food, posted above, I think that it belongs as much in the cookbooks thread as in this thread. I don't know if it's permitted to make a duplicate post, but if it is and someone wants to post it on the cookbooks thread, be my guest.

Over 100 Free Computer-Related (Broadly Speaking) Books
It's been about a day since I've posted anything.
I'm going through some very powerful withdrawal symptoms. The only thing to do is get another "fix" by posting something. I did a search and for some reason no one on MR apparently has mentioned MakeUseOf.com as a great place to get free ebooks. I even checked MR's Wiki page (https://wiki.mobileread.com/wiki/Free_eBooks (a great resource, by the way. Check it out, if you haven't already, or haven't done so recently)). I've been aware of MakeUseOf.com for quite a while and have downloaded quite a few good books. Almost all, if not all, of MakeUseOf.com's books are in some way related to computers, including covering topics concerning ebooks. MakeUseOf.com says that the books are free. I checked the first two or three books listed and, indeed, the pdf and epub versions are free, but the Kindle (mobi) versions have a nominal charge of 99 cents each. Oh, and you can read the books online for free if that's your druthers. Of course, I'm not going to list all of the books that the site offers, because . . . . well . . . . okay I'm too lazy. But, I'm going to list them until I get tired of doing it, so that you can get an idea of what they offer: An Unofficial Guide to Goodreads for Readers and Writers Project Gutenberg: More than Just Free Books Learn to Build with PHP: A Crash Course M[down arrow] Learning Markdown: Write for the Web, Faster Programming a Game with Unity: A Beginner's Guide How to Write a Privacy Policy for Your Website Earn Money Online: Writing, Transcribing, and Tutoring Gigs Your Complete Guide to Windows Customization Research Your Family Tree Online Guide to KDE: The Other Linux Desktop How to Start an Online Business The Unofficial Beginner's Guide to Tumblr Press Play: The DVDFab Media Player 2 Manual Unofficial Guide to Tor: Really Private Browsing Okay, maybe you get the idea. Anyway, here's the linky to the homepage: http://www.makeuseof.com/. Last edited by GtrsRGr8; 04-29-2014 at 09:50 PM. |

Free Kindle Book on Saltwater Aquariums
Saltwater Fish and Reef Tanks: From Beginner to Expert. By Zechariah Blanchard. Second edition: updated and expanded. Five stars out of 5, but only from 1 review at the present moment. Digital list price $3.99; Kindle price $0.00. http://www.amazon.com/Saltwater-Fish...nner+to+Expert.
Most people think owning a saltwater aquarium is rocket science, but in truth it is extremely easy. All you need are some basic steps. Through simple practices you can not only own a beautiful saltwater aquarium, but you can grow some of the strangest and most colorful life on earth inside the privacy of your home or office. This mini-ecosystem is your window into a strange world below the waves. In this book we will dive into the depths of saltwater aquarium maintenance. You will be walked through the ins and outs of owning and maintaining a saltwater aquarium. It will start with your decision to purchase and end with an amazing reef or fish only tank that will stun almost anyone. If you are considering or have made the decision to acquire a saltwater aquarium this book will save you countless headaches and hundreds if not thousands of dollars. The things you will learn in this text can shock and amaze even the most advanced hobbyist. There is so much information out there – don’t waste your time digging to find the answers. Grab the answers right here where I have laid them out for you. Not only do I have countless years of experience as a hobbyist, I also have experience as a store owner helping hobbyist daily. "Patience is probably the single most important thing right behind water quality, flow, and lighting. This hobby does not start out fast and can very easily turn for the worst if you don’t take your time. Dumping money into a saltwater aquarium before you know what is going on inside the glass walls is very dangerous financially and for the livestock. It takes time to build a happy reef." "Setting up the aquarium is very simple, but first we are going to discuss the cycle. I want to talk about this first because most people will skip it and it should NOT be skipped. This is where most people lose the majority of money in this hobby and quit. Trust me when I say this section is important. I will make it as easy as possible. The aquarium cycle is basically setting up a biological filter for the tank. Saltwater aquariums can’t survive without adequate filtration. Biological filters take what is in their surroundings and purify it for use by the life in the ecosystem. Everything in the contained system is part of the biological filtration. From amoebas to human beings we are all part of the cycle of the large biological filter we call earth. Okay, so what does this have to do with the aquarium cycle you might ask? Simply put, your aquarium" - Passages like these offer insight into a wealth of heartache and money saving information packed in these pages. This book is going to save you a lot of time and money. If you want to learn a lot in a short period of time, download this book right now. Thanks! |

Nelson and the Nile by Brian Lavery
The Battle of the Nile, fought on 1 August 1798, was a great victory, dealing a fatal blow to Napoleon Bonaparte’s ambitions in the Middle East and cementing Nelson's place as a national hero. But the battle itself was only the decisive event in a campaign of many months, upon the outcome of which depended the domination of the Mediterranean and the whole strategic situation in Europe. In this book bestselling historian Brian Lavery places the Battle of the Nile in its full strategic context, showing the interplay of military and political factors that sent Nelson’s squadron into the Mediterranean in pursuit of the powerful French invasion fleet. This was also Nelson’s first independent fleet command, and the author shows the development of his command style and the forging of the esprit de corps which was later to triumph at Trafalgar. http://www.amazon.com/Nelson-Nile-Br...dp/B00JOBJGQ0/ http://www.amazon.co.uk/Nelson-Nile-...dp/B00JOBJGQ0/ Brian Lavery is one of Britain’s leading naval historians and a prolific author. A Curator Emeritus at the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, and a renowned expert on the sailing navy and the Royal Navy, in 2007 he won the prestigious Desmond Wettern Maritime Media Award. His naval writing was further honoured in 2008 with the Society of Nautical Research's Anderson Medal. His recent titles include Royal Tars (2010), We Shall Fight On The Beaches (2009), In Which They Served (2008), Churchill's Navy (2006), and the Sunday Times bestseller Empire of the Seas (2010). |

Great find! I love history. I remembered that Napoleon had been booted out of Egypt, but didn't know about (or remember) the battle of the Nile.

I was just taking Charles River Editors' word for it. In an email that I received yesterday, and dated April 30 at 11:18 a.m., they said, "Dear Readers: We are running our end of month special today and tomorrow, with over 40 free original titles that can be found at . . . ." "Today and tomorrow" based on the time that the email was received and the dating of the email would have been yesterday, Wednesday, April 30 and today, Thursday, May 1. I'm going to be wary of them from now on. Thanks for letting us know about the two titles that are free today. I didn't have either one, and I got both. |
