How did you do the factory reset? There are multiple methods and some produce different results. That you got corrupt database afters is strange. But, did the device take you through the setup process?
I have factory reset the device several times and am still getting the same database errors in Calibre.

EDIT: I have reverted to the previous firmware and this seems to have solved the problem.

No light on the Elipsa either. I've rolled back to 4.29.18730.

That doesn't make sense. There isn't anything in the firmware changes that would do this. In fact, firmware 4.30.18838 fixes a known problem that would cause database corruption when connecting to the PC.

I have been having issues with my Clara HD, and they seemed to get worse at about the time 4.30.18838 was released. But, that appears to have been the SD card. I replaced it over the weekend and it has been running fine since. The only way I can see the firmware update being a contributing factor to that is if the update put something critical in a location on the SD card that was failing faster than the rest.

Also, I asked "How did you do the factory reset?" for a reason. As I said, what happens when a factory reset is done depends on how you start it. That could affect what was happening, and could affect what happens after going back to an older firmware version.

I have found that with my Kobo on 4.30.xxxx I can't update Calibre to 5.32. But this doesn't seem to affect anything I want to do.

I'm using calibre 5.32 and haven't seen any issues with 4.30.18838. What type of issues are you seeing? Database error? Just not connecting?

I did the factory reset on the device. I then downloaded the older firmware and installed it manually. At this stage everything seemed to work again. My device has since updated and the problem comes returns.

If you have another way to factory reset I would be interested to try it.

No, just when I ran the install wizard for Calibre 5.32, I got a message saying it couldn't install (I can't remember the exact wording). It rolled back to 5.31 which works fine.

Sometimes a new release introduces more problems than it solves. For me, and this is the first time I can say this about any Kobo firmware, this is the case.

I had no problems with the version that my Kobo Sage shipped with (4.29.18730) but this version just isn't worth the update. I never could get the lighting issue (where when the USB charger is plugged in the indicator light only stayed lit for a few seconds) to go away and the firmware seemed to bring up the orientation menu on its own occasionally.

I rolled back earlier today and will almost certainly stay with the older version of the firmware until Kobo comes out with a new version.

Thankfully rolling back versions is a simple thing to do.

You mean you used the factory reset option on the Device information page of the Settings? If so, that isn't a complete factory reset. It formats the book partition, but, doesn't change the root partition. If you do the factory reset from the Developers options or externally, using the steps on https://help.kobo.com/hc/en-us/articles/360017605314, it will also format the root partition and restore the factory firmware. Updating after that is cleaner, especially if you don't want to use the latest version.

Downgrading the firmware without doing this might have issues. Usually, going back one or two firmware versions is OK. But, there are some firmware versions that it won't work for. Because of some of the updates, it is possible that 4.30.18838 is one of them.

For calibre, if you have version 5.31 installed, you should be able to install 5.32. But, without knowing what the error was, it is impossible to say what happened.

I did a factory reset from the developer menu, as you suggested.

The problems remain exactly as described above. Here is the error message once again (now on a freshly factory reset device, auto-updated immediately on first boot):

I am not sure whether this is with 4.30.18838 or 4.29.18730. You have stated you downgraded above, but, I don't know if you are now seeing the error with 4.29.18730 or have tried 4.30.18838 again.

In any case, this suggests something else is going on. As I stated, I have no issues with any of my devices using 4.30.18838 (barring a failed SD card that has been replaced). And I don't remember seeing any other reports suggesting a problem. I think that a failing card, cable or port are more likely than it being a firmware issue.

If you think the cause is calibre, then you can check the database using some other SQLite database management tool before using calibre.

Are we sure this patch includes the fix for the comic reader? I started having sync issues (won't connect, clock stops working, battery suddenly goes from full this morning to 1% this evening despite not being used most of the day) after opening a CBZ file with this version.

I'm doing a factory reset now after five failed WiFi syncs in a row. Also, it stopped connecting to my WiFi, even after the factory reset.
