Washington and Hamilton: The Alliance That Forged America by Stephen F. Knott & Tony Williams - $1.99

Quote:
The Untold Story of the Extraordinary Alliance That Forged Our Nation and the Unlikely Duo Behind It: George Washington & Alexander Hamilton

In the wake of the American Revolution, the Founding Fathers faced a daunting task: overcome their competing visions to build a new nation, the likes of which the world had never seen. As hostile debates raged over how to protect their new hard-won freedoms, two men formed an improbable partnership that would launch the fledgling United States: George Washington and Alexander Hamilton.

Washington and Hamilton chronicles the unlikely collaboration between these two conflicting characters at the heart of our national narrative: Washington, the indispensable general devoted to classical virtues, and Hamilton, an ambitious officer and lawyer eager for fame of the noblest kind.

Working together, they laid the groundwork for the institutions that govern the United States to this day and protected each other from bitter attacks from Jefferson and Madison, who considered their policies a betrayal of the republican ideals they had fought for.

Yet while Washington and Hamilton's different personalities often led to fruitful collaboration, their conflicting ideals also tested the boundaries of their relationship—and threatened the future of the new republic.

From the rumblings of the American Revolution through the fractious Constitutional Convention and America's turbulent first years, this captivating history reveals the stunning impact of this unlikely duo that set the United States on the path to becoming a superpower.

The Arsenal of Democracy: FDR, Detroit, and an Epic Quest to Arm an America at War by A. J. Baime - $2.99
Amazon US | Kobo | Google | B&N

Quote:
As the United States entered World War II, the military was in desperate need of tanks, jeeps, and, most important, airplanes. Germany had been amassing weaponry and airplanes for five years—the United States for only months. So President Roosevelt turned to the American auto industry, specifically the Ford Motor Company, where Edsel Ford made the outrageous claim that he would construct the largest airplane factory in the world, a plant that could build a “bomber an hour.” And so began one of the most fascinating and overlooked chapters in American history.

Drawing on unique access to archival material and exhaustive research, A. J. Baime has crafted a riveting narrative that hopscotches from Detroit to Washington to Normandy, from the assembly lines to the frontlines, and from the depths of professional and personal failure to the heights that Ford Motor Company and the American military ultimately achieved in the sky.

Chasing Aphrodite: The Hunt for Looted Antiquities at the World's Richest Museum by Jason Felch & Ralph Frammolino - $1.99
Amazon US | Kobo | Google | B&N
Quote:
In recent years, several of America’s leading art museums have voluntarily given up their finest pieces of classical art to the governments of Italy and Greece. The monetary value is estimated at over half a billion dollars. Why would they be moved to such unheard-of generosity?

The answer lies at the Getty, one of the world’s richest and most troubled museums, and scandalous revelations that it had been buying looted antiquities for decades. Drawing on a trove of confidential museum records and frank interviews, Felch and Frammolino give us a fly-on-the-wall account of the inner workings of a world-class museum and tell the story of the Getty’s dealings in the illegal antiquities trade. The outlandish characters and bad behavior could come straight from the pages of a thriller—the wealthy recluse founder, the cagey Italian art investigator, the playboy curator, the narcissist CEO—but their chilling effects on the rest of the art world have been all too real, as the authors show in novelistic detail.

I'm on the mailing list of a company called WarGameVault. The best that I can tell, they specialize in supplying people who play war games, with printed matter especially.

Anyway, they occasionally have "Deal of the Day" books, at steep markdowns, that could be of interest to a much more general audience. Today is one of those days. The book is The Comic Art of War: A Critical Study of Military Cartoons, 1805-2014.

This is not a comic book, but a book about a special type of comics. Therefore, I'm posting it on this thread, not the comic books thread.

The blurb:
For military cartoonists the absurdity of war inspires a laugh-or-cry response and provides an endless source of un-funny amusement.

Cartoons by hundreds of artists-at-arms from more than a dozen countries and spanning two centuries are included in this study--the first to consider such a broad range of military comics.

War and military life are examined through the inside jokes of the men and women who served.

The author analyzes themes of culture, hierarchy, enemies and allies, geography, sexuality, combat, and civilian relations and describes how comics function within a community.

A number of artists included were known for their work with Disney, Marvel Comics, the New Yorker and Madison Avenue but many lesser known artists are recognized.

They have the ebook (watermarked PDF) today for only $6.00. They say that the MSRP is $35.95. Amazon's ebook version (Kindle mobi) is $19.99.

To purchase the ebook, point your web browser to this webpage.

Unfortunately, with this being a deal of the day, once you see the deal there is often much less than a full day left before the deal expires. At this writing, there is approximately 13 hours before the end of this one.

Principles of Beautiful Web Design at Amazon $15.66; The PDF of the Same Book FREE.

You'll need a work email address or a LinkedIn account, but if you have one of those, you can get a very valuable freebie.

It is The Principles of Beautiful Web Design. This is the 3rd edition, the most recent one. And the fact that it's been through 3 editions should tell you something about the quality of this book.

But don't depend on just that. It's rated 4.2 stars, but from only 14 reviews at the present time at Amazon; it's rated 3.92 (excellent, for them), from 900 ratings at GoodReads. The author Jason Beaird has written a slew of web-related books, many of which have been highly rated and/or bestsellers.

Here's the blurb from the giveaway website, Shareware on Sale:
A methodical approach to presenting traditional graphic design theory as it applies to today’s website development industry.

This book presents what the author knows about designing for the Web in a way that anyone can understand and apply. Why? Because the basics of website design should be common knowledge. We all live in and work on an internet that has been blindly covering up ugly with more ugly since its inception. It’s time to break that chain and make bold moves toward better design.

The price of the digital book (Kindle mobi) is $15.66. This free digital download is a PDF.

Here's a webpage that I think will allow you to grab this freebie.

I'm assuming that you don't know a lot of the names because they are out-of-the-way places? At any rate, several are. But those are the places that I love best!

I'm boycotting Belize. They are an English-speaking democracy, but they make it extremely difficult for a citizen of theirs to emigrate to another country, unless that policy has changed in the last 9 years or so. A friend here in the States married a woman of Belize (Belizean?) about 10 years ago, and at least a year later he still couldn't get the authorities there to let her go to him in the States. That was about the last time that I saw or talked to him. We in the U.S. take so many of our great freedoms, like the freedom to move to another country, for granted. About the young man, yeah, I know, it was foolish on his part not to know or whatever, but still . . . .

Thanks for your post. I grabbed all of them.

Already needs a major revision, what with Fidel Castro buying the ranch a few days ago.

One great thing about digital books, though, is that they can be revised and in the customers' "hands" in nearly no time.

The Most Comprehensive Single-Volume History of the Korean War--Now 91% Off!

Off of the digital list price. Makes the price of this 540-page book an almost unbelievable 99 cents! I went back and checked from 2 1/2 years ago (the maximum that I could) and found that the price on this ebook has never been this low since at least then!

#1 seller in the Kindle store in one category.

No ruminating was necessary about this ebook--it's a definite must-post.

This Kind of War: The Classic Military History of the Korean War (50th anniversary edition (2014)). By T.R. Fehrenbach . Rated 4.4 stars, from 369 reviews at Amazon at the present moment. Physical book list price N/A; digital list price $10.99; Kindle price now $0.99. Open Road Media, publisher. 540 pages. https://www.amazon.com/This-Kind-War.../dp/B00J3EU6IK.

Book Description
This Kind of War is the most comprehensive single-volume history of the Korean-American conflict that began in 1950 and is still affecting United States foreign policy. Fifty years later, not only does this enlightening account give details of the tactics, infantrymen, and equipment, it also chronicles the story of military and political unpreparedness that led to a profligate loss of American lives in Korea.

T. R. Fehrenbach, an officer in the conflict, provides us with accounts of the combat situation that could only have been written by an eyewitness in the thick of the action. But what truly sets this book apart from other military memoirs is the piercing analysis of the global political maneuverings behind the brutal ground warfare that marked this bloody period of history, one that has been all but forgotten.

Hailed as “a must for all soldiers and former soldiers” by an Amazon.com reviewer,
This Kind of War restores the Korean War to its rightful place in American history—as a touchstone for US foreign engagement and a lesson for politicians ready to shed American blood on faraway soil.

#1 seller in the Kindle store in one category.

No ruminating was necessary about this ebook--it's a definite must-post.

This is one of the best books on the Korean War I have read. Not only do you get a comphrensive look at the miltary campaigns of this war the author also pulls back from the battlefied and puts the war in it's proper historical context as an outlier of WW2 and shows how the global political chess game that the United States and her Allies and the Soviet Union, China and there satellites were playing dictated how this war was fought. It also gives a good overview of effects of the war on global politics up to when the book was written in the mid 1960's. I consider this to be the seminal work on the Korean War even though we now have far more information from all three of the major players then T. R. Fehrenbach had when he wrote the book.
