Sherlock Holmes and the Shadwell Shadows

The Cthulhu Casebooks (book 1)

It is the autumn of 1880, and Dr. John Watson has just returned from Afghanistan. Badly injured and desperate to forget a nightmarish expedition that left him doubting his sanity, Watson is close to destitution when he meets the extraordinary Sherlock Holmes, who is investigating a series of deaths in the Shadwell district of London. Several bodies have been found, the victims appearing to have starved to death over the course of several weeks, and yet they were reported alive and well mere days before. Moreover, there are disturbing reports of creeping shadows that inspire dread in any who stray too close.

* Holmes deduces a connection between the deaths and a sinister drug lord who is seeking to expand his criminal empire. Yet both he and Watson are soon forced to accept that there are forces at work far more powerful than they could ever have imagined. Forces that can be summoned, if one is brave—or mad—enough to dare …
Rental FAQ
  • Spoiler:
    Quote:
When does my rental period begin?

Your rental timer will begin counting down when you first initiate the download on your device or 10 days after purchase, whichever comes first.
    Quote:
How long can I listen to a title?

All digital rentals provide a minimum of 30 days to listen to a book from the time you initiate your first download. With some of our longer books, such as Atlas Shrugged (63hrs), we extend the listening period to 60 days. You do have the option of purchasing a 5, 10, or 20 day extension after you have made your rental purchase.
    Quote:
How many times can I listen to my rental?

You may listen to a rental as many times as you would like until it expires.
    Quote:
Can I extend my rental time period?

Once you are logged into your Downpour.com account, you can purchase a time extension for any of your previous rentals via THIS link. After clicking “Extend Rental,” you have the option of purchasing a 5-day ($1.95), 10-day ($2.95) or 20-day ($4.95) extension. If your rental has not yet expired, the purchased time will be added onto your rental. (Example: if your rental has one day remaining, and you purchase a five-day extension, you will now have six days total before your rental expires.) If your rental has already expired, the extension will allow you to listen to your book again for the amount of time purchased.
    Quote:
Can I have the same rental on more than one device?

You may listen to your audiobook rental on as many personal devices as you own. Your rental time will be synced across all devices on which you have installed the Downpour app.

Alright, FINALLY something worth posting! I've shied away lately from posting most of the self-pub freebies that have come through lately (on Google Play, eStories, Kobo, etc.) because most of them seemed iffy. This one is self-pub, but it is fairly well-known (I've had it in my Kindle library for a few years) and was a pretty good seller back in its day. I'd probably rank it up there with Morgan Rice's "A Quest of Heroes" as for as its notoriety.
  • FREE -- Altdorf -- J. K. Swift, Brad Wills / 8.2 hrs --> Fantasy
Quote:
A druid priestess enlists the help of an ex-Hospitaller warrior and a charismatic outlaw to fight Austrian tyranny in medieval Switzerland. A subtle blend of fantasy and history, Altdorf tells the events leading up to one of the greatest underdog stories of the medieval age, the Battle of Morgarten.

At the end of the thirteenth century, five hundred orphans and second sons are rounded up from villages in the Alpine countryside and sold to the Hospitaller Knights of St John. Trained to serve as Soldiers of Christ, they fight in eastern lands they know nothing about, for a cause they do not understand.

Thomas Schwyzer, released from his vows by the Grandmaster of the Hospitallers, returns to the land of his birth a stranger. Once a leader of men, and captain of the Order’s most famous war galley, he now settles into the simple life of a ferryman. He believes this new role to be God’s reward for years of faithful service fighting the Infidel in Outremer.

Seraina, considered a witch by most, a healer by some, is a young woman with a purpose. A Priestess of the Old Religion, and the last Druid disciple of the Helvetii Celts, she has been gifted by the Great Weave to see what others cannot. Her people need her guidance and protection now more than ever. For Duke Leopold of Habsburg, in his efforts to control the St. Gotthard Pass, builds a great Austrian fortress in Altdorf. Once finished, the Habsburg occupation will be complete, but the atrocities visited upon her people will have just begun.
Enjoy!

I inquired. I received this in my reply "In order the title to be considered as 'finished', a customer must listen to the title all the way through the ending credits. " So guess I am not getting the credit, because quite often I do not listen to the credits, and I have no way of knowing which I did or didn't.

Here's Audible's latest notice. They're claiming that everyone who qualified has been notified. I haven't been notified yet. What's going on, Audible?

Back to the phone I go.

Back to the phone I go.
After a 59 minute phone call and escalating my complaint to a supervisor, I was finally issued a code for my $20 Amazon credit.

The CS rep kept saying I didn't qualify, but didn't know why I was disqualified. He asked if I was connected to the internet the whole time I listened to each book, if I used the app, which OS I used, did I listen to the very last second of each book to the very end, which books did I listen to, when did I listen to them, were they over 3 hours, when did I purchase the books, and on an on. I finally said enough. Let me talk to a supervisor. He repeated most of the points the CS rep went through and couldn't find out why I was being disqualified. In the end, he sent me the code and said he was doing it because I had a good history with Audible and that he didn't doubt that I listened to the books.

The key thing is that I was persistent and didn't take no for an answer. When the CS rep kept trying to nitpick everything in minute detail, I countered back that the terms never said that.

So, was it worth this aggravation to get the credit? You be the judge.

And again, Audible has proven that they're incapable of running these promotions properly.

Did they have legitimate issues with the tracker? or did they 'conveniently' have issues with it so they could 'conveniently' disqualify people later on?

Leaving folks in the dark as to whether or not they've qualified during a promo is not the way to do things. Hey Audible, get your act together.

Damn. That's just wrong. I guess I need to get on the phone with audible now and add more stress to my day. I got the completion success email back when I listened to the third book, but didn't get the reward email.

That shouldn't be an issue because no where in the terms does it say you have to listen to the closing credits. They're nitpicking so that can deny you. That's oh so wrong.

Well, If listening till the system marks the title as "finished" is the only way to judge if you finished or not, I can't get too upset about that.

But I'm really ticked that I'm on the phone with an Audible supervisor now, wasting my time, and having to PROVE that they already told me I earned the reward. I'm going to to send them the email I got, but when my son completed it, the tracker was already broken, and he got no email.

I'm getting angry.

When I said I listened to the end and didn't move on until I saw the finished banner, the rep still asked if I listened to the very last second including all of the credits

Your issue should've been simple to rectify because you received the completion email. Why they're still saying you don't qualify is beyond disbelief.
